Don't just limit yourself to Sturgis; the wider region has numerous cultural and scenic attractions which await the savvy traveler. You may also wish to check out Blackhawk, 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the northwest, and Belle Fourche 25 miles (40 kilometers) to the southeast.
About 25 miles (40 kilometers) to the southeast of Sturgis is Rapid City, a regional city where you can visit Dinosaur Park, Central States Fairgrounds and Rushmore Mall. Don't head back to Sturgis until you've checked out Rapid City's Watiki Water Park, The Journey Museum and Reptile Gardens.
To really get an understanding of a region, it helps to step back into earlier times. Western South Dakota's colorful archeological sites are a great starting point.
If you enjoy the water, this is a great place for watersports. Canoeing is popular with the locals and another option is swimming. If you are happy to head outdoors in winter, this region may be the perfect destination. This area offers some terrific opportunities for snow shoeing and cross-country skiing.
The most convenient major airport, Rapid City Regional Airport, is located in Rapid City, 35 miles (56 kilometers) to the southeast of Sturgis, so take that into account when booking your trip.
