VRBO as a company let us down - BIG TIME
One thing that we have counted on VRBO and HomeAway was to protect us as renters from bad things happening while travelling. This trip was a complete failure on their part and they have refused to do anything to make it right. Throughout our stay at this property, my family had to navigate around the homeless person who stayed on the front steps, the prostitutes on the corner down the street, and the drug use throughout the neighborhood. We even got kicked out of a cab because the driver refused to go into this neighborhood at night. When we brought this to the attention, their response was "Because this was a choice that you made with out our advisement you took the responsibility of knowing the state of the area that you chose". This was for a property that with an above average cost per night, so the expectations were for something with a reasonable amount of safety and amenities. The owners of this property were responsive. After a second night without blankets on the beds they went out and purchased some blankets and sheets for the beds. A look on the VRBO website has headlines such as "Your Vacation is Safe with Us" and there is another section about "Trust and Safety" that talks about being "dedicated to providing a safe and secure marketplace for travelers". However, another part of the response from customer service was "We understand the desire for safety, but the property that you booked was done so on your own." Seems like the response from customer service was a poor representation of the qualities that are being promoted on the website.

In the Heart of Athens
This apartment in the heart of Athens is exactly as described. There was plenty of room for my extended family of twelve. Though the common area ( kitchen) was a bit tight for twelve, we managed. The three bathrooms were clean and up to date but being from the US we thought it odd for two of the three not to have shower curtains. Some of us had seen this before in other Greek homes, so that was not a big issue. One of the bathrooms is a bit tight . There is a lovely patio on the roof for morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening or just chilling out. It took us thirty minutes to walk to the Acropolis so it would be a short ride if you were to cab it. We stayed three nights and being on holiday, we spent most of our time sightseeing, and not in the unit. Communication with the property manager was excellent, someone was there to greet us upon arrival and give us the keys. The small elevator was a blessing for those with large baggage. Thank you Team Erra for the affordable, clean, accommodations.

Affordable Athens Apartment
Overall this apartment suited the needs of our group. We were a group of 8 ladies that came to serve at a local refugee center. The rooms were spacious and the balcony rooms were especially nice. There was a nice terrace area a few floors up that sadly we didn't realize until a few days before we left. It is very nicely decorated with plants and is open to all the guests. The apartment is located right in front of a bus stop and is 8-10 minutes from 2 different metro stops that are in opposite directions with different connecting lines. The main concern is the area the apartment is located in. If you went one way, it appeared to be safe and the other way looked as if at night, it wouldn't be as safe to walk around by yourself. It seems that this is common the closer you get to the city center in Athens and somewhat unavoidable. Unfortunately homelessness is a real problem in Athens and not one you can really avoid regardless of where you stay near the city center. Given that reality, overall the location was not bad. We felt safe to travel around during the day and in the summer the sun stays out until at least 9 p.m. I'm not sure I would venture out later than that, but that is just my preference. It is also very close to an open area that sometimes has protests. There are always police guarding the area though. The Erra team did a great job decorating and making the space feel homey. The kitchen area is nice. There is no living area space which was a downside, but given the number of rooms that is understandable. The kitchen does have a nice table that seats six with two other chairs, but it is a bit crowded with 8 people all in the kitchen at once. We did have an issue with the washing machine not working, but we notified the Erra Team and they let us use their housekeeper's laundry machines which we greatly appreciated. Overall I would rate our stay as nice given the need we had for the space.

Clean and Comfortable, Good Urban Location
We enjoyed our stay here - very clean and mostly comfortable (see notes below). Convenient to the bus, so we could get around the city quickly. Modern appliances and new linens - looks like some major upgrades have been done. Bedrooms are spacious and nicely furnished. The apartment and the building are very secure - plus, we never felt uncomfortable walking the neighborhood. It is literally around the corner from the National Archeaological Museum. A grocery store is just down the block; Syntagma Square and Monisteraki Plaka are both 20-30 minute walks. Host is very responsive and worked hard to make us welcome. Some suggestions and notes: Although the listing says it sleeps 16, the common area is very small - a kitchen and table with 6 chairs. Perhaps turn the bedroom off the kitchen into more common area (and maybe put in a TV)? There is street noise because it is on a major street. Mattresses are new and extremely hard (for American tastes) at this point in time. Biggest problem is the showers in the 2 front baths - no shower curtains, so the entire bathroom is drenched despite trying to minimize spray. Suggest installing pressure-mounted shower rods with curtains on the long sides which at least would protect the walls. But overall a very nice stay and we would definitely recommend it.
