The room we were given was absolutely freezing with a gale blowing through the window just at head height as you lay in bed and as the room was so small there was no way of moving away from this. we had a terrible night sleep. We were removed to a twin room which was more acceptable and we could at least move around. The ‘cosy’ rooms are very, very small. Tea and coffee making facilities are in the foyer but the coffee had always run out and the hot water would always run out so it wasn’t really very satisfactory. The staff are trying their best, but they can’t really check people in and be constantly refilling coffee. I cannot recommend this hotel and I would never stay there again." Biggest issue was that the hotel only had one working lift (elevator) for ten floors - you can imagine how busy that one elevator was! Breakfast was OK, though the eggs benedict was luke-warm rather than hot. Decent continental breakfast selection, but mini-croissants were not fresh, and there was a distinct lack of any fresh bread (only sliced bread for toasting) - a few baguettes would make a difference! The room was pretty spacious and comfortable and reasonably quiet. It looked a little tired in places, but nothing too troubling. The staircase used in place of the elevator service was somewhat grubby in places and not what would be expected of a 4\* hotel. The exit/entry off Calton Road is a bonus for easy access to Edinburgh Waverley Station. The gym, although small in size, was well-equipped with free weights, and the steam room in the spa was a real bonus."
