Unfortunately - Storm Emma!

Posted Mar 7, 2018
Pros: The gardens were pretty and I would expect in better weather would be really enjoyable. The sea views are pleasant. Helpful staff,
Cons: I would suggest different furniture in either reception or part of the bar area - all is currently wicker not that comfortable..
Location: Fine for walking, hilly, to the Cristo de Rei statue or to Canico /Canico de Baixa which takes a few hours. Bus stop is right opposite to Funchal.
My time at the Dom Pedro Garajau was marred by the weather. Storm Emma was passing through. The hotel is not really designed for spending a lot of time indoors. The rooms are basic but very clean. A couple of the blocks are in the process of being refurbished. The only access from the rooms are via outside - so in particularly wet and windy weather this is not comfortable. The reception/bar area is ok for summer but designed to be warm and inviting on wet days unfortunately. The staff though are all very nice indeed. The restaurant although basic, has lovely staff and quite a reasonable selection of choice for the price you pay. The bonus of a carafe of wine included in half board option is very thoughtful. Not sure cold Brussel sprouts and ham is my idea of a salad though on one of the days, but someone must love it. All in all, its worth a visit for those on a budget.

Nice hotel close to beach and restaurants

Posted Jan 6, 2018
Pros: Closeness to buses, beach with little cable car and variety of good value for money restaurants. It was spotlessly clean and beds were comfortable
Cons: Needs updating but I believe this has started.
Location: Beach really close with cable car. Bus stop outside and access to two good value supermarkets with all essentials.
We booked this hotel because of the convenience to buses, beach, walks and restaurants. The hotel was comfortable and clean and parts are being renovated for the new season. Our room needed updating so I am assuming this will be done in due time with the other parts. However it was spotlessly clean and the beds comfortable and we had a small balcony with a garden view and was sunny all during the day. Breakfast was good - we don't eat pork so were happy with the scrambled eggs and beans and cereals. However for others they felt it was not of sufficent variety. The heated indoor pool was good and because of the glass ceiling the sun shine through so it felt warm and summer like!! Wifi was only in the lobby so you had to come out of your apartment/room to get to the lobby for Internet access. I would recommend this hotel for its convenience and value for money.

Posted Aug 31, 2017
Pros: Location and the unique architecture.
Cons: Possiblely Tea and coffee facilities in each room
Location: Good walks among the locals and the shops and eateries .
First time on the island and would certainly return both to Madeira and Dom Pedro. I found the people friendly and helpful both in the hotel and in the the places I visited . I covered about 2/3 ds of the island visiting as many things and places as possible, I will return to finish of what I missedL

Good location, average accommodation

Posted Aug 9, 2017
Nice pool area and helpful reception staff. The hotel is also in a good location, close to the beach with excellent transport links. However, the walls are paper thin - you can hear EVERY noise from the rooms next door and above, no wi fi or air conditioning in bedrooms, no tea/coffee making facilities, very few rooms actually have a view and you must pay to use the room safe. The hotel is also spread widely up along the road - that means if you are staying in block 6 it is a 6 minute walk to reception and to the restaurant for meal times. The hotel does not provide and leaflets or information about the immediate local area - there is a good beach and bar that you wouldn't know about!

Close to the beach

Posted Jul 14, 2017
The hotel is dated needs t have rooms bought up to date single beds no iron or hairdryer. When I asked for a hair dryer I was told I could only have it for 2 hours, that's fine but our room was 500metres up the road. Breakfast menu never changed for the 14 days. Overall the rooms were large

Clean hotel with indoor and outdoor pools.

Was given an adjoining room which was not good. Wifi in reception was good. Staff were friendly and helpful. Good views of sea from room. Breakfast was ok but could have been better.
