Alte Friedrichsburg | Historic Gem

Located on Cora St, one of the most charming and historic streets in town, Alte Friedrichsburg doesn't disappoint in telling the history of early 1900's Fredericksburg. Lavishly decorated with native German settler antiquities, this is one not to be missed by aficionados of history and unparalleled elegance. Arriving at the home, you can't help but be immediately charmed by its cheerful pale blue paint and inviting front porch. However, these two aspects are just a taste of the wonders that await you inside. Branching off from a pleasant foyer, to the left you'll find a resplendent parlor occupied by opulent seating, a lavish oversized rug, and handsome historic oak flooring while to the right lies the first bedroom, appropriately named “the honeymoon suite,” that features a grandiose full tester bed complimented by the oak floors continued from the parlor and foyer. Further in are a lovely second bedroom with an ornate wooden headboard and a second seating area that is a bit less formal than the parlor but just as exquisitely furnished. Both bathrooms in the home feature desirable gray stone floors with one featuring a romantic clawfoot tub with handheld shower and the other a modern walk-in shower. The true gem of the home though has to be the spectacular dining room. A grand oak table with seating for 8 is encircled by exceptional wooden display cabinets brimming with delicate crystal and polished silver that is certain to make each meal a special occasion.

Alte Friedrichsburg had the distinction of being selected as one of seven homes to take part in the 60th Christmas Home Tour & Market on December 2nd, 2017.

$38.00*/extra person after the first 3 in the group/night
*plus 13% hotel/motel tax

Things to be aware of:
1. The second bedroom does not have doors on it.
2. The home's single bed is located in the home's rear living room and this room does not have doors.
3. While the home does have modern conveniences including central air & heat, internet, and television, the home is decorated in the theme of an early 20th century home and, as a result, is very different than what most of people would be used to in their own homes.

Character
We chose this property due to its historic charm that we saw in pictures. However, it is much more cluttered in person than it appears in the photos. The back sunroom area was lacking the chairs that appeared in the pictures and instead had a bed. The couches were incredibly uncomfortable and we spent most of our nights sitting on the floor. This would be very comfortable and cute with better seating and some declutterring

Crowded and creepy
Porches had delapitated furniture and little relaxing room. Very crowded with furniture and antiques. Stubbed our toes, hard to get thru living room. Uncomfortable furniture. One shelf cover fell off and bruised my granddaughters leg. No where for us to watch tv as it’s in small bedroom with one chair viewing it. Back yard and flower bed just a mess. Would be dangerous for kids.

This is museum, not a VRBO
I will start off by telling you I am a history professor and of course appreciate history. However, this home should be a museum. Lots of valuable artifacts. And the smell (musky, old). And the carpet. Yuck. The location was great but that’s about it. The place is junked up. Find a more relaxing place to stay.

Great if you like a house filled to the brim with antiques
Pros: running water (including hot water), electricity, bathrooms, clean beds. Within walking distance to Main Street. Cons: no heat going to the room w/ the single bed. Had to turn up the heat in order to get that room comfortable for sleeping while the rest of the house got hot. A LOT of antiques and history to go through in this home, but it is too much for anyone to be comfortable. Every drawer. Every cabinet. Every closet. Every surface. Every countertop. All filled with too much stuff. We had nowhere to unpack our things for our stay as we felt we were intruding if we put a suitcase in a closet or hung clothes in a closet that already was full of other things. Too much furniture but no furniture for a group to sit in and be around to have conversation at the end of a long day. We ended up sitting at the kitchen table in very uncomfortable chairs so we could sit around and talk. Two coffee pots: the large one does not work and the small one took half an hour to brew 5 cups. Difficult to access electric outlets to plug in phones to charge. Nightlights full of dust and dead bugs. Bedroom off the kitchen has a ceiling fan that is broken. The backyard is overgrown and the back porch is full of more antiques and furniture—-again not comfortable nor inviting (or clean) to guests to make themselves at home. Someone left food in the baby carriage on the front porch prior to our arrival and we had no idea what it was or how long it had been there.

Great Experience
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! There were some issues with the A/C, but the property owners/managers responded quickly, had it fixed and refunded us for a portion of our stay.

A Place Left in Time
We loved our stay at the Alte house. We love history, we love antiques and we love charming. This is the place to stay to appreciate history at it's finest. This is a place for adult only company. There are too many priceless antiques for children to be around. We are so thankful for the opportunity to stay here. We will hold it in our hearts. Kudos for sharing this amazing part of history with us. Thank you -- Gene and Laurie

Back in Time
If you remove the a/c and electric, the house transports you back to the early 1900's. Beautiful antique furniture in the house, along with an abundance of period pieces. If you are looking to go back to the early 1900's, then this is the place for you!

Didn’t stay if you have children
My 11 year old and 5 year old were completely freaked out when they saw the inside and we told them we were spending the night, lots of dolls. To be honest, my wife and I did not want to stay there either. The house is very cluttered and has a creepily historic Victorian vibe. We ended up getting a hotel. If you want an authentic Victorian house this is this place to book. Beautiful but not family friendly.

Historical Charm
We stayed here for a girls’ weekend and loved it! We all love history and enjoyed looking at everything displayed in the home. We were comfortable and enjoyed sitting in the parlor in the evening. We all wish we had stayed one extra day to do nothing but explore every nook and cranny because there was so much to see!

Girl’s Weekend
The property is unique and very interesting. Some beautiful pieces of furniture and dinner ware. But cluttered and dusty. The yard and porches could be lovely but they were dirty and cluttered. We did appreciate the authenticity of the property. Thank you for letting us explore your home

More Museum than House
Well maintained older home in nice neighborhood. Much of the house is unusable because it is filled antiques that are not suitable for everyday use. Listing does emphasize antiques, but expected more usable furniture.

A great German -Texas experience
So many Fredericksburg treasures lovingly packed into this spacious house! It is obvious that the hosts are proud of their family ties to the Texas German community and of their meticulous restoration of this Fredericksburg home. We appreciated the size of the property and three separate beds. The kitchen was amply stocked for breakfast with a great variety of foods and coffees. It was an extremely cold weekend, but we were comfortable and warm in this home. Great neighborhood, and quite convenient to the main part of town.

Fredericksburg Antique Delight
Historic, period authentic property with many, many antiques. Comfortable interior, ample front and back porch space to enjoy outdoor reading, coffee in the morning or al fresco dining. I would not recommend for young children as there are many breakable items.
