The hotel is very good, modern and clean, with excellent location relative to Fisherman's Wharf. The room was funky, spacious and very clean. The only slight downside was the noise from the traffic outside but I personally could ignore it.

My husband and I celebrated Valentine's Day weekend here, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! Service was excellent, very friendly staff, there was a wonderful aroma throughout the hotel and rooms. The towel rack was heated, they had a pillow "menu" to choose from, and a complimentary plastic refillable water bottle which can be refilled in the lobby at a filtered water station. The city view from our room was gorgeous! They upgraded our room and included breakfast at no extra charge. They have bikes that can be rented right there at the lobby. Walking distance to China town (Chinese new year celebration was going ok that weekend), it was a wonderful experience! Will defenitely be going back to this hotel!

Beautiful hotel with excellent staff. The front des, bellmen, valets and bartender were all personable and effecient. We have stayed at many holes in SF over the years. This was the best ever, from arrival to departure. Everything was excellent.

Located just down the street from Union Square, near the Theatre district, cable car line, and next to some great art galleries and restaurants. This hotel has great vintage charm, a nice heated pool, and clean, comfortable decent sized rooms. The staff was a little reserved, but other than that, no complaints.

The Whitcomb is a once upon a time grand hotel that needs to rethink a fuller renovation. While the lobby is quite beautiful in an historical sense, honoring that history with a lack of electric outlets in a room in this modern age means to fall behind the demands of the modern traveler. Mind you, the Whitcomb was pleasant enough and give me easy access to the Moscone Center, the rooms need better lighting, and the bathrooms need to be upgraded to meet modern requirements. While the bathrooms have been renovated somewhat, hair dryer, great shower head, the faucet handles, wobbly, need to be switched out for new styles. The bathroom is in desperate need of shelving, as otherwise one has to put their toilet articles on the closet shelf or dresser. Going back to the electric outlets, when guests ask for extensions or the multiple plug receptacles and are told, "many of asked, so they are out of them," this is a problem. A guest shouldn't have to get down on the floor and switch out the plug on the floor lamp for the one on his computer. On the plus side, it is a venerable hotel, with a knowledgeable staff and a convenient restaurant that serves a nice breakfast variety. Like many things in this world, it has great potential but needs a more thorough makeover.
