South Shore, PA

Pittsburgh

A city skyline with modern skyscrapers and a river in the foreground.
A two-story house with a porch, brick columns, and a picket fence.
A river with a bridge, a van on the road, and buildings in the background.
A panoramic view of a city skyline with prominent skyscrapers, including a distinctive castle-like building, from a high vantage point with a circular viewing platform.
A modern building complex by a river, surrounded by lush greenery and other urban structures.
Majestic 19th-century stations house cable cars running up to leafy hills, while the soccer stadium provides spectacular views of the city center.

South Shore is a thriving renovated district filled with converted warehouses on the southern bank of Pittsburgh’s trio of waterways. With 19th-century cable cars leading down from the Duquesne Hills, the zone showcases a fascinating industrial history that was integral to the development of the city. Visit South Shore to enjoy the views stretching across the Monongahela and Ohio rivers to the skyscrapers decorating the city center.

At the western end of the strip stands the Duquesne Incline that dates back to the 1800s and continues to transport visitors and commuters to and from the hills. Step inside the wooden cars and marvel at the old-world machinery.

Wander through Points of View Park that surrounds the cable car and study the statue of George Washington. From the top of the park, the vista incorporates Heinz Field, the Carnegie Science Center and the Rivers Casino Pittsburgh.

Head southeast until you reach Highmark Stadium, where the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC play soccer. Watch a game and revel in the local atmosphere, against a backdrop of central Pittsburgh’s cityscape. Prepare for a few loose balls to fly into the adjacent river from this scenic soccer stadium.

Go on a river cruise with the Gateway Clipper Fleet, which is popular for weddings and sightseeing tours.

As evening falls, relax at one of the restaurants and bars of the busy Station Square open-air shopping complex. Beside the mall stands the lower level of the Monongahela Incline, a 19th-century cable car station with a stunning pink façade.

South Shore is a long and narrow strip covering the southern part of the meeting point of Pittsburgh’s three rivers. Ride the cable cars down from the neighboring Mt. Washington and Duquesne Heights districts or arrive at the Station Square metro station.

Continue to explore the city by visiting the sights of the Downtown Pittsburgh district, South Side Slopes and South Side Flats.

"The stay overall was fine, but my main issue was with the cleanliness of the room. When we walked in there was dried fruit (I hope) on the floor, the night stand/alarm clock were dusty, and it had a musty smell. We had a junior suite. The bathroom was extremely small, and the door to it didn’t shut ..."
