Restaurant Row and scenic leafy parks lie along the ridge of a famous hill, where George Washington mapped the terrain for the British.

For panoramic views of Pittsburgh, visit Mount Washington, a neighborhood set on a dramatic hill towering above the southern banks of the Monongahela River. Points of View Park on the edge of the hill has a viewing platform with binocular posts and a sculpture of President George Washington and Seneca leader Guyasuta. Take photos of the eclectic cityscape from the concrete ledge of the park.

Stroll along the top of the hill and meet various joggers and dog walkers here. Bring food and drink to set up a picnic overlooking the river. Make your way through the serene woodland area of Emerald View Park.

Head west and wander past the impressive houses in Chatham Village, a serene community full of enchanting gardens and Georgian colonial revival architecture. Choose from the array of exclusive eating options on Restaurant Row. Other highlights include Skookum Field, the Grandview Overlook and Olympia Park.

Consider the history of the area, which was originally known as Coal Hill and contained mines. George Washington stood here to map out the topography below for the British before he led the Revolutionary War and became the first U.S. president.

Ride the Duquesne Incline or the Monongahela Incline to the top of the hill. You will need to buy a ticket for the ride kids get a discount. Appreciate the glorious views of the area as you move up the rails in these vintage cars.

Mount Washington is located between Allentown and Ridgemont on the southern shore of the Monongahela River. From Downtown Pittsburgh, travel by metro to Station Square, a short walk from each of the inclines.

While you’re in the region, make sure to explore other neighborhooods such as South Shore, Allegheny-West and the Cultural District.
