Lakefront/nature retreat, 50 miles from NYC, close to Le Chateau (South Salem

Newly renovated modern lakefront house (3 full bathrooms and 3 bedrooms), in a charming and relaxing neighborhood, with endless activities all year round. This contemporary lake house in South Salem, New York, features direct access to one of the most beautiful lakes in the state of New York, Lake Waccabuc. It has stylish mid-century interiors (a gut renovation was completed recently; the renovation was done with high end materials and appliances). The house has stunning lake views from almost every room; two decks overlooking the lake (one large deck right outside the kitchen/living-room and one smaller, right outside the master bedroom--the large deck has a hot tub but it is NOT available to renters as it was damaged by previous renters). It has one back garden with a garage and a large front garden with direct access to the lake and to our private dock (from which you can watch beautiful sunsets). We have a fire pit that you are welcome to use in the front garden. We also have a private float where the water is deeper, from which you can dive in (it is close to our private dock). We have several kayaks and a canoe that you are welcome to use (lake Waccabuc is connected to two other lakes, so it is fun to kayak to these 2 other lakes), as well as snorkeling equipment. The house sleeps 8 + 2 (we have inflatable mattresses to accommodate more guests). This spacious home is great for big families or for several couples, with a flexible layout and space to relax. This house is enjoyable all year round: in the Summer, spend your days swimming in the lake, kayaking across the water to Long Pond Preserve park or lounging on the private deck - this is a great place to enjoy nature and wild animals. You can see lots of birds, deer, beaver, swan, herons, and lots of other wildlife from the deck or the garden! You can explore the sand beaches on the lakes, the island or the other two interconnected lakes by kayak (note that the pontoon boat is NOT available for rent because of insurance issues).
In the Fall, the foliage is beautiful on the lake and one mile away, there are great hiking trails with views of the mountains, forests and lakes; there are several other parks within a 15 minute drive.
In the Winter and Spring, drive 25 minutes to ski at Thunder Ridge or ice skate on the lake right outside the house. It is also less than 4 miles away from the wedding venue Le Chateau, so it's an ideal location for families attending weddings there and looking for accommodation. Very convenient if you are planning a last minute trip from New York; it is just an hour away from Manhattan, so you can day-trip to visit family-friendly tourist spots such as Central Park Zoo (45 minutes away), Metropolitan Museum of Art or Rockefeller Center, (one hour drive) before returning to a relaxing natural setting, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is just over an hour drive to LaGuardia or JFK airport.

Beautiful, clean, and peaceful
Comfortable and well appointed home on the lake. Property was clean and well maintained. Owners were caring and responsive. Had a great time taking out the canoe for a peaceful and inspiring morning paddle amid the autumn colors.

Weekend away with family
We had a great time at the house. We were in town for a soccer tournament and the location was perfect. The kids enjoyed being on the lake and just sitting by the water. The house is spacious and very well set up for families. We enjoyed it very much.

Spacious home, nice area, but dirty and frustrating host
The house is very large and comfortable with a large deck overlooking a pretty pond. Furniture seems new and the house was equipped with great kitchen appliances, etc. what was very odd was the fact that we showed up and their was food in the fridge, dirty sponges in the kitchen, only a half roll of paper towels and half used bars of soap in every shower. The owner is clearly there a lot because every bathroom seemed to have personal toiletries and their place just had personal items in every room. I did manage to find some new soap in the bathroom after I had already gone it to buy sponges, paper towels, etc….the owner directed me to a medicine cabinet with a bunch of old sample soaps from hotels!!!!! That’s a first for a VRBO. The door lock was overly complicated…they had to send a video to show how to unlock it. It also completely broke while we were there so the place was never secure. The owner said they’d refund me one night for the inconvenience but never did. Then she had the nerve to text me “when are you checking out?”….um, at checkout time. Would never stay here again …. Way overpriced and cheap owners. Also not ADA so forget it if you have older relatives. .

Had an amazing July 4th weekend! the location could not have been better, the home was well stocked and equipped and we had so much fun on the lake! So quiet and serene while being within close proximity to the main town and some excellent restaurants. Laurence was extremely helpful and accommodating during our stay. Beautiful relaxing destination with plenty of options for entertainment
Our stay at Laurence’s was amazing. It is a beautiful relaxing destination with plenty of options for entertainment (kayaking, hiking on the beautiful trails, beautiful towns close to the house with great restaurants, etc). The house itself is beautiful, modern, spacious and lots of natural light pouring in. The beds and bathrooms are extremely comfortable and everything is squeaky clean. The view of the lake from the house is spectacular. This home is great for a weekend away to just relax and recharge. The weather was nice (although a little bit chilly) and we took advantage of the garden that is located right on the lake. It was wonderful to sit outside by the fire pit, admiring the Fall foliage, and watch the sunset. There are two decks overlooking the lake that are great to relax and watch the stars at night. The space is so peaceful and relaxing that we didn’t want to leave. There are lots of activities you can do around the house. We went kayaking on the very peaceful and gorgeous lake and went hiking on several trails that are part of the Mountain lakes State Park (less than one mile away from the house --you can actually walk from the house to the trails; some of us went for a long run in that wonderful park). The view (of the mountains and lakes) was amazing and the Fall foliage gorgeous! We went to the town of Ridgefield to see a movie and had dinner at a delicious restaurant there. It is a great place to visit! If you like mid-century architecture, there are several mid-century houses you can visit in the area (one of them, the famous Glass House by Philip Johnson in New Canaan, 20 minutes away from the house). We also went to ride horses at a horse farm, just 5 minutes away from the house. The kids loved it! Laurence was the absolute perfect host. She took the time to provide clear instructions and instantly answered all our questions. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking to stay in this area, especially since it is so close to New York, and yet, you feel you are in the middle of the countryside! We had a wonderful time and hope to be back soon! Anna
