Boat rentals, green parks and a range of museums make this a fun and enlightening setting in the waterside zone at Wellington’s core.

For stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, visit the Wellington Waterfront, a coastal hub of entertainment and culture. Its parks and heritage trails make this picturesque area a popular spot for cycling, skating and jogging. Dine at one of the many cafés and restaurants along the shore against a scenic backdrop of the water.

Rent a pedal boat or kayak to take out on the water with your family. Look back on the waterfront, with Wellington’s green mountains rising behind it. Stroll along the intertwining paths of Frank Kitts Park, which has a tall slide for kids that looks like a lighthouse. Admire the Albatross fountain sculpture and see the Water Whirler that sprays water in all directions. Enjoy a picnic with friends in the open-air amphitheater, which often hosts events.

Study the impressive Wahine Memorial that commemorates those who died when a ferry capsized and sunk in Wellington Harbour. Next door, the Māori Arts Gallery showcases all types of traditional works.

Head to the northern end of the waterfront and enter the Wellington Museum, housed in a majestic blue building. Its comprehensive exhibits provide insights into regional history. Peruse the bars and restaurants on Queens Wharf, which is also known for its excellent cafés.

Attend a show in one of the three auditoriums of the TSB Arena complex. Note that events take place on the lively waterfront throughout the year, including Waitangi Day celebrations, the Pasifika festival and Chinese New Year.

The Wellington Waterfront is in the heart of the city, surrounded by many of its main attractions. Walk south from the Wellington railway station for about 10 minutes to reach the core of the waterfront. If you are travelling by car, leave your vehicle in one of the parking lots. Explore the surroundings for landmarks such as the Wellington Cable Car, the City Gallery Wellington and the Antrim House.

9/10 Wonderful! (430 reviews)
Great location but no reception desk. They got my email wrong so we had no idea how to check in or where to park. Parking was expensive. Construction going on so foyer and lift a bit dirty. Loose tap and leaky shower hose. Bed was ok but sofas weren't. Had no milk so bought our own.
