Acapulco Tradicional is the Old Town area of Acapulco, where all types of historic attractions lie. Enclosed by beaches and cliffs, it is a scenic spot with a wide range of restaurants, bars and shopping options. On a visit to Acapulco Tradicional, stroll through this old-world coastal zone to get a sense of the city’s history.

Admire the rounded white façade of La Catedral, which features a pair of towers topped by domes. Built in the 20th century, the structure has a neocolonial style inspired by the Moors and Byzantines. Enter for the ornate décor featuring gold tiles and mosaics.

The church overlooks the Zócalo, the district’s main square. Meet friends near the plaza’s charming bandstand in the shade of trees. Explore the various shops and cafés skirting the square and watch people pass by in this lively area.

Walk east to the restored 17th-century Fort San Diego, which contains displays on the history of the city. Nearby, look for the model ships and exhibits on Acapulco’s seafaring past in the Naval History Museum.

A little south is the coastal area of Las Playas. Sunbathe on the golden sandy strand of the Playa Caleta, which has a swimming area and gorgeous views of the mountains. Study the impressive Mural Diego Rivera, featuring a serpent, among other colorful creatures. Nearby are La Quebrada Cliffs, a stunning viewpoint known for daring cliff divers. Watch these professionals fall 135 feet (41 meters) into the water. The divers play a key role in the Elvis Presley movie Fun in Acapulco.

Facing Acapulco Bay, the Acapulco Tradicional district comprises the southern portion of the historic center of the city. Get around this district of historic treasures, rugged cliffs and golden beaches on foot. Then head farther afield to explore surrounding areas such as Marañona, La Fábrica and the rest of the Barrios Históricos section.
