January visit.
Carol’s property was clean and very well stocked. We visited in January with plenty of snow on the roads. Carol and Les kept the property plowed and easy to navigate. Inside, there were plenty of extra blankets, quality kitchen utensils for cooking and even extra parkas if your group needed them. When we return to Fairbanks we plan to stay with Carol again.

A slice of heaven!
Carol and Les were fantastic hosts. They gave us access to the on site cameras to help us spot the active Auroras. We were also given local knowledge of the best activities. This property is located on the edge of town, away from the city light pollution, which makes it great to view the Auroras. It is also extremely quiet and peaceful. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Fairbanks.

Four guys working 14 hours a day for 2 weeks. Rooms were great. Had enough room for mattresses we brought for the work contract. Carol and Les are very accommodating and made our stay very comfortable. We will be back renting both properties if available next year. Felt like home and enjoyed there company.

We booked because of the reviews about Carol
Myself and two friends set about to travel to Fairbanks to see the northern lights. We reviewed many listings but the reviews about Carol and Les were outstanding - and were 100% on point. Warm, homemade cookies awaited us when we arrived. Staying in the apartment below their home was almost like staying in their home. There were all of the cooking utensils, spices, condiments, etc that you would have in your own home - probably more! There was aluminum foil, ziplocs, etc which almost is never found in a vrbo. Prior to our trip Carol was extremely helpful about planning our things to do. While we were there she gave us guidance and recommendations as well. Our trip could not have been more perfect and I believe it had a lot to do with Carol and Wes. I will be back in the summertime, and have already recommended this property to friends.

Just like being at home!
We had a wonderful time spending a week at Aspen Woods, we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. Location and hosts were perfect! We had no plans while there, just enjoyed the scenery one day at a time. Our daughter has severe food allergies and the convenience of have all kitchen necessities makes our vacation much more enjoyable

More than we asked for!
Host was so welcoming, and chalet was more than well-equipped and very comfortable. Even before we arrived, we received helpful information and links to every imaginable area attraction. We were there to catch the aurora, and host shared live camera app, allowing us to remain inside and warm while waiting for activity to show! Visible right on property! Host has 2 rentals on property. Chalet shares main building with host’s home, which is the story above chalet.

Able to take advantage of all winter activities in Fairbanks
We had a great time. Very friendly hosts. She recommended great businesses where we experienced dog sledding, reindeer ranch, Chena Hot Springs, and snowmobiling. It snowed 5 nights so we did not have a great chance to see the northern lights. The 2 nights that were available the lights were not as bright as some of the pictures. I guess that means we have to come back...

Best Hosts In Every Way!
Les and Carol are very kind people and their home is lovingly cared for, warm (and that’s saying something in -35 degrees Fahrenheit), the beds are comfortable, the space is not large but it has everything one needs when you come in out of the cold. It is located close to town, but surrounded by trees, making it feel like you are far from everything and makes the lights easy to see when they are happening. Everything about our stay was a joy and a pleasure. Carol was in regular contact before, during and after our vacation. We were greeted with delicious home made cookies and lovely flowers. The first morning Carol came down and gave us all the information we could possibly need to enjoy Fairbanks and the surrounding area. In addition to the excellent communication and wonderful home, their motion detector alerting you of the northern lights activity made it so easy to stay inside out of the cold and know when to layer on those clothes and get out there to catch the lights. The system alerts you that motion is taking place and shows a quick video of the activity so you know when it’s time to get out there to enjoy the show. It works perfectly. We were able to stay in bed until it was the exact time to get dressed and get out there. The best viewing spot was right outside at the top of the driveway. The home’s location outside of town means the city lights do not distract from the lights in the sky. We went to Fairbanks to see the lights and boy oh boy did we get a show! In all, everything about our stay with Carol & Les was all we could hope for. We were welcomed, warm and delighted with everything around us. If we ever return to Fairbanks the only place we would consider staying is with Les and Carol. Thank you so much for a wonderful vacation!!

The hosts, Carol and Les were amazing! Very communicative and hospitable. The place was clean and spacious. It was equipped with everything a house could need. We felt at home. We loved the cooper nature trail they have in their property- very unique. The property is very serene and we were able to view the aurora from the front yard. We will definitely stay here again.

Loved our stay in the Aspen woods chalet! It was great for older people, no stairs. The personal service was amazing. Carol sent me emails ahead of time with lots of ideas of things to do. When our flight came in really late, she had coffee, cream and eggs, bread waiting in the frig for the next morning. We loved the fresh baked cranberry, chocolate chip cookies. The property is beautiful with lots of flowers and beautiful trees. Loved walking the path behind the property. We enjoyed chatting with Carol and even went to see her at her booth at the Farmers market. Very comfortable place to stay with everything we ever needed, 10 minutes from the airport. Great choice for my elderly parents and I to stay for my nephew's wedding. Thanks Carol and Les for your great hospitality, made it seem like home, way better than a hotel!!

GREAT RETREAT NEAR FAIRBANKS
Carol and Les made this stay amazing! The property is in a great location just outside the city but close enough to Fairbanks to be convenient to everything! It was perfect for me and my son. It was clean, very nicely decorated and comfortable. I was arriving late and Carol made sure i had some food and fresh cookies when i got there. Everything you need to cook is there if you need it. The bathroom had shampoo/conditioner, body wash, hand soap and lotion. Nice touch! TV options were great if you are into that sort of thing. I'm from Louisiana so beware if you are used to air conditioning. There is none, but there are plenty of windows for ventilation and it worked out perfectly. Overall, we were very comfortable during our stay. Carol and Les are very attentive and want to make sure you're having the best stay. I would definitely stay here again!

One thing, even though there isn't any air conditioning , it stays naturally cool, it will stay 67 degrees in there all the time, even if the windows are closed, just leave all systems off. Because it is built halfway into the ground, the place is naturally cool, eco-friendly and no air conditioning needed. Also it is Alaska, so there is usually only one month we get 80 + degree weather and we are in it right now. You're very welcome to stay here again!

Best place to stay for Aurora Trip
Carol and Les are great and sweet hosts! We were well taken care of from the checkin, to alerting us to see the aurora from their backyard at 2am, to all their little touches to make our stay as memorable as possible. Carol and Les' place is right outside the Fairbanks City lights, which makes viewing the aurora possible from the back yard. Les himself is a aurora photographer, so he has great tips for you, too. Learning about Carol and Les' journey to move to Alaska and building their dream home was quite an inspiration and could offer some ideas to anyone who is figuring out their future plan. We enjoyed so much connecting with Carol and Les. Look forward to revisiting their place in a summer time!!!

Perfect home away from home
This place was amazing. My first time booking with Vrbo and did not disappoint. My husband and I were here for our anniversary. It was just like having our own private apartment, only cleaner! The chalet was extremely clean and fully stocked. Just after arriving we were greeted by a moose in the yard! We made coffee each morning, just like at home. Carol even let us know about some local stuff happening so we were able to catch a dog mushing race! Got to see the World Ice Championships not only during the day but went back at night when they were all lit up. We saw the Northern Lights in our pajamas right in the driveway - amazing! The smart TV has a Roku that was easy to set up with our own streaming apps but we barely used it we were so busy. Great location - close to town without being IN town. We are definitely planning another trip and this next time we'll have to try their Bungalow!

Excellent Fairbanks rental
We arrived very late as the train to Fairbanks was delayed 6 hours and Carol left the door unlocked so we would have no issues with the coded door. The unit was extremely well equipped. Large flat TV, kitchen appliances and cooking ware. Very nice to have washer and dryer for ski pants. The welcome cookies were a very treat when we arrive hungry at 2 am. Parking with electricity very near the door to keep the keep engine from freezing. Great location for getting around Fairbanks. So much more than we expected! Would rent again upon returning to Fairbanks.

Fairbanks Gem
This property lives up to its 5 star rating. It is located in a beautiful, secluded area only minutes from shopping, restaurants, the airport, etc. The unit is very much as nice as the photos - clean, cozy, and stocked with supplies unlike any other rental I have stayed in. Carol the host had coffee supplies, tea, homemade cookies, and more awaiting our arrival. Carol is very accommodating with check in, check out. She has lots of suggestions for activities, dining etc. We came primarily to see the Aurora and we were so lucky to have an amazing Aurora storm. We did drive to a nearby hill top location to watch, but we were also able to see the Aurora directly above the property. We really liked this home and would definitely stay again!

Perfect Location
Carol & Les were such gracious hosts! Carol went above and beyond to make our check in/out effortless. We had a late check in and Carol had breakfast items waiting for us in the fridge, she even made homemade cookies which she left on the table with fresh flowers and a welcome card. She is also very knowledgeable about things to do in the area. The chalet kitchen is well stocked, the bed is super cozy and the property is gorgeous! There is a great snowshoe trail right next to the property and a closet full of winter clothing in case you need extra or forgot something. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay in a Smallwood property again.

Wow! We could not ask for more accommodating hosts. Unit has stocked kitchen, extra outerwear, sleds, and when I asked for something additional (pepper flakes for my pizza) wham! Carol produced it! Also helped with our unwinterized rental car! Great location. Don't hesitate. This is prime for your winter stay!

Yes, it is nice when family can meet here, and there is a great outside area as well in the Summer, a lawn, a garden of perennials to walk thru, a trail that connects to the property, and a deck near the garden with a private grill for guests to sit in the sun or hang out. There is also a set of Bocce balls that can be played on the lawn. If you are coming in the Winter, you can rent skis from town and cross country ski on the connecting trail.

Hospitality and peace
The hosts, Carol and Les, were so helpful, accommodating and generous. The apartment was supplied beyond the norm, well decorated and cozy comfortable. Carol provided suggestions for dining, activities and notices on aurora sightings. The property was lovely and had a walking path to get out for a stretch. Though not located within walking distance of amenities, it was easy to get around Fairbanks by car and also close to a choice of aurora viewing locations. Being in the basement apartment we did hear some of the family's activities above but it didn't bother us. I especially enjoyed the bird and squirrel feeder outside the kitchen window. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom towels big, fat and fluffy. It was just the 2 of us. Though there are 2 bedrooms, they are connected and the 2nd bedroom requires passing through the main bedroom to go to the other rooms. Not a problem for us. A quiet property with pretty landscaping and natural beauty. The hosts were really lovely folks and we enjoyed meeting them. They were not intrusive but responded to our interactions and we ended our week long stay with drinks together. A great experience.

Goes out of their way to make you feel welcome
This property is even more beautiful than the pictures convey. Inside is very nice. The flowers outside are gorgeous. The hostess went out of her way to make us feel comfortable. Highly recommended.

Our second home in Alaska
Staying with Les and Carol was a fantastic experience. The property was very clean and a high quality living space. Everything was new and professional finishes with easily accessible technology like Netflix & Hulu. The hosts were perfectly balanced between being there for assistance but not intrusive. Conveniently close to the university for our college visit but isolated to be away from the city and enjoy nature. Looking forward to stay here again.

Perfect for family gathering
We had lots of room for our family to visit us. Our granddaughter played in the sandbox while we chatted on the deck. Quiet at night, had everything we needed. Highly recommend.

Amazing
Our stay was spectacular, home is situated in a beautiful area that is remote but yet close to everything. Carol was an amazing host and made sure all of our needs were met. The house was super comfy and had everything we needed. I would highly recommend anyone coming to Fairbanks to stay here! You will feel most welcome and cozy!!

Wonderful stay
Warm cozy place to stay. Host are attentive and friendly. It’s a perfect distance away from town but easy to find and family friendly with a trail through the woods. Would rent again. A 5 star rating for sure.

Very nice stay
Loved the location and the extra amenity touches were so thoughtful and appreciated. I hope to stay there again and enjoy the location when there is no snow. Carol was easy to work with even when my booking dates ended up changing.

Amazing Honeymoon Adventure!
Came to Alaska on honeymoon a first for both of us and this house, location and hosts did not disappoint. The home was cozy, comfy, clean and prepared for our arrival with a coffee bar, fresh wild Alaskan cranberry and chocolate chip cookies,a bar and some toiletries.

Great property and owners are wonderful
We really enjoyed this location and the owners were wonderful. They had many things ready when we got there. They even had coffee and creamer! Things that I always have to get when I arrive and they provided all the comforts of home.

Clean, all the extras - wonderful host
Very hospitable, friendly and thoughtful hosts! Amazingly clean, beautiful, all the extras - even fresh flowers on arrival and food in the fridge. We were surprised that one of the bedrooms was basically inside the other (like maybe it was originally a very large walk-in closet) and we had to walk through the first bedroom to get to ours. Rather awkward as we stayed with another couple. Also, we expected the location to be dark - we were hoping (even though we were a bit early) to maybe see the Northern Lights. There were bright security lights that made it hard to even look up at the sky in that direction. In no way do I think the hosts are trying to be deceptive or to hide the information, I just think it’s not clear when viewing the home online. I still think it’s an wonderful property and we felt very comfortable and well-taken care of. I would just want to know those two things upfront.

Gwen, Thank you for your review. I will say that the 2nd bedroom which is large enough for a queen sized bed and dresser, was originally built as a daughter's bedroom. Both bedrooms have doors , but it probably is more convenient to a family group of 4. Security lights are turned off when there is a Chance to see the auroras, we are mindful of that but the dates in which you were here was starting on September 9 when the nights are still not very dark until the wee hours of the morning, 1 am and on. AND more importantly, the activity level for auroras during your stay was very low, (only a 2)with lots of cloudy weather, therefore since there was little chance you'd be seeing any auroras Overhead on those dates, the security lights remained on. Be assured if there was a chance, Weather is Clear, and Aurora activity is high, we would turn off the house lights. In addition, all you had to do was ask, I'm always available by 2 phone # and by text. A simple phone call would have solved the issue. Thank you very much for choosing us for your stay, we're glad you were so comfortable. Carol & Les

Highly Recommend
Carol is wonderful, personable, helpful and communicative. She sent us updates on the northern lights and areas where they could be seen. In addition, she was very helpful when booking other excursions that my 2-year-old toddler would enjoy. She made sure we had everything we needed for our trip. As for the property, it is simply perfect. Spacious yet cozy, comfortable, very clean, easy accessed and affordable. We had the best time traveling all over Alaska and returning every night for a great rest.
