Originally the palace of Alawite sultans, it is today one of the multiple palaces or royal residences of the “imperial cities” (dars el makhzen). This is the case of the Skhirat Palace, where an attempted coup d'état took place during the time of King Hassan II. It is in this palace that the seat of government is located.
