Though the team is in the process of rebuilding, the Buffalo Sabres continue to pack crowds into the KeyBank Center for lively net-to-net action. Rather than stick with the go-to Buffalo team nickname of “Bisons,” the city’s new team chose to call themselves the Sabres and played their first game in 1970. A spin of a roulette wheel led to Gilbert Perreault joining the team in their first season, and he ended up scoring more goals than any other rookie up to that point. But his record was soon eclipsed the next season by Rick Martin, who, along with Rene Robert and Perreault, made up the powerful line known as the “French Connection.” The 1974–75 season saw the team make their first Stanley Cup appearance, which included the legendary Fog Game, but they ended up losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in 6 games. There were plenty of ups and downs in the years that followed, but the Sabres once again returned to the Stanley Cup in 1999. Led by hall-of-fame goaltender Dominik Hasek, Miroslav Šatan, and Michal Grošek, the team lost to the Dallas Stars because of 2 controversial goals that Buffalo fans still remember. Since then, the league has had a couple lockouts and the team has had a few owners, but the Sabres have now stabilized and are ready to fight their way through the Atlantic Division.
The Buffalo Sabres will open the 2022-23 season on home ice at KeyBank Centre on Thursday, October 13 against the Ottawa Senators. The longest homestands of the season come early in the year. First, the Sabres will have four in a row at home from Thursday, October 27 through Wednesday, November 2 against Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. The 2022–23 Buffalo Sabres season will be the 53rd season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on May 22, 1970. This will be the first season since the inaugural season in 1970–71 in which Rick Jeanneret will not call games.
