The Hurricanes took North Carolina by storm when they arrived in 1997 after spending 25 years in the Northeast as the Whalers. Originally part of the WHA, the New England Whalers joined the NHL in 1979 and had only 3 winning seasons before moving south to North Carolina. Though their first game in their new state was a sell-out, the early seasons featured countless off-ice problems. Luckily, this disarray didn’t affect the team, and they finally made it back to the playoffs in 1999 thanks to stars like Ron Francis and Keith Primeau. Though they didn’t get to the finals, the team had a solid foundation that led to the Hurricane’s remarkable success in 2002. After making it into the playoffs, they defeated the New Jersey Devils in the first round and managed to take out the Montreal Canadiens in the second round thanks in part to Niclas Wallin’s goal in a game dubbed “The Miracle at Molson.” Martin Gelinas scored the golden goal in overtime to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs, securing the Hurricanes a spot in the Stanley Cup championship, which they ultimately lost to the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings. Despite that loss and a league-wide lockout during the 2004–05 season, the Hurricanes regrouped and managed to make it back into the playoffs in the 2005–06 season. After completing the regular season with 52 wins and 112 points, they faced off against and defeated their postseason rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, in the first round. In the next matchup, Cory Stillman sealed the fate of the New Jersey Devils with a series-winning goal in Game 5. The Buffalo Sabres skated into town for the next round and managed to take the series all the way to Game 7, which the Hurricanes ultimately won. At that point, only the Edmonton Oilers stood between the Canes and a Stanley Cup. Cam Ward was spectacular in the goal and Eric Staal was awesome up front, leading the team to win their first Stanley Cup after 7 intense games. Since then, the team has experienced some ups and downs, but the fans have stuck with the Hurricanes.
The Carolina Hurricanes will open the season against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, October 12 at PNC Arena. The 2022–23 Carolina Hurricanes season will be the 44th season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established in June 1979, and 25th season since the franchise relocated from the Hartford Whalers to start the 1997–98 NHL season.
