Liddell had the fight in his blood from a young age, beginning to study Koei-Kan karate when he was only 12 years old. He started on the San Marcos High School football team and also excelled at wrestling. At the California Polytechnic State University, he became a Division 1 wrestler. His Brazilian jiu-jitsu training came before his first UFC debut as well, training under Jon Lewis. Liddell quickly solidified his position as a top contender, gaining early victories over fighters like Kevin Randleman, Jeff Monson and Tito Ortiz. One of Liddell’s most notable fights was the Pride Grand Prix Tournament against Overeem. Muay Thai specialist Alistair Overeem was taller, quicker and more technical, getting the best of Liddell at the start of the match. After Liddell was about to land an overhand punch to Overeem’s head, he rushed in with straight rights to knock Overeem out in the first round. Liddell was featured as a coach in the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter. Team members Diego Sanches and Forrest Griffin were part of team Liddell and eventually won the season, and went on to record successful careers in the UFC. Chuck Liddell was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2009. The following year, UFC president Dana White announced that Chuck Liddell is retired from the UFC, only hours after his final match against Rich Franklin.
