World's Greatest Show

Cirque du Soleil was founded by two former street performers, Guy Laliberte and Gilles Ste-Croix, in Canada in 1984. The show struggled financial for a year, prior to a government grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Laliberte hired Guy Caron from the National Circus School in 1984 to reevaluate its production. With its theatrical and character-driven nature, Cirque du Soleil became the standard contemporary circus. The show is a mixture of different circus styles from around the globe, while maintaining its own central theme and storyline. The creation of Nouvelle Experience, Cirque du Soleil’s fourth touring show, rapidly increased the productions profits, and gave them room to create new shows. They went from 1 show to 19 shows during the 1990’s and 2000’s, and now employ over 4,000 people in over 40 different countries. Several other ventures are in the making for the two entrepreneurs, including a television deal, a women’s clothing line, and possibly a spa, restaurant and nightclub deal as well. Cirque du Soleil also puts on private events every year, past clients including the royal family of Dubai and the 2007 Super Bowl. The circus has one a handful of awards and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
