New York Giants History

The Jints helped establish professional football’s legitimacy in 1930 when, in a game that raised more than $100,000 for New York’s homeless, they played against—and decimated—Notre Dame’s prominent college football team. Their victory over the Fighting Irish surprised football fans and fixed the NFL in the American imagination as the legitimate, if gladiatorial, franchise it is today. Giants lore also tells of historic games like The Greatest Game Ever Played, a 1958 championship spectacle against the Baltimore Colts that was so tightly-matched and explosive it propelled the NFL to greater heights of popularity. The Sneakers Game of 1934 was an NFL title game played on a field so icy the G-Men had to wear sneakers for better traction to triumph over the Chicago Bears.

Despite the Giants’ part in the epic saga of American football, their impressive trophy shelf, and contribution of 28 players to the Hall of Fame, Big Blue struggled with an 18-year championship drought between 1938 and 1956 and with a playoff dry spell from 1964 to 1978. Finally, after all the slumps and rebuilding years, head coach Bill Parcells, quarterback Phil Simms, and an ironclad defense known as the Big Blue Wrecking Crew led the Giants to achieve consecutive winning seasons from 1984 to 1986, culminating in their first 2 Super Bowl wins, XXI and XXV. Eli Manning has since led the team to their third and fourth Super Bowl wins, XLII and XLVI. After a few recent disappointing seasons, the Giants are hoping to make a comeback this year.

The Giants Today

In the new season, the Giants made some changes for the team. On January 21, 2022, the Giants hired Joe Schoen, the former assistant general manager for the Buffalo Bills, as their general manager. Then on January 28, 2022, Brian Daboll, the former offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, was hired as head coach. The 2022 season will be the New York Giants' 98th in the National Football League, and their first under the head coach and general manager tandem of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen. They will attempt to improve from their 4–13 record from the previous season, to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016, as well as win the NFC East for the first time since 2011.
