New Orleans Saints Team History

The Saints were founded in 1966 after the city of New Orleans was awarded an NFL franchise. During the AFL-NFL merger during the 1970 season, the Saints were placed in the same division as the Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Rams (previously St. Louis Rams), and the San Francisco 49ers, which has led to the development of long-standing rivalries that still exist to this day. However, the Saints were barely competitive for their first 20 years.  The team did not finish with a winning season until 1987 when they finished 12-3, which qualified them for the playoffs that ended with a loss to the Minnesota Vikings 44-10.

As the team began to improve over the years, Hurricane Katrina devastated most of the Gulf Coast and severely damaged the team’s home venue, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The team’s first post-Katrina home game in 2006 was an emotionally charged Monday Night Football matchup where they defeated the Atlanta Falcons 23-3. The 2009 season was a historic one for Saints and their most successful to date. After winning a franchise record 13 games, they qualified for Super Bowl XLIV and defeated the AFC champion, the Indianapolis Colts 31-7.
