The Pittsburgh Pirates were founded during the eighth season of the National League in 1887. Since their creation, the team proved the be competitive. They won three NL titles from 1901 to 1903, played in the first World Series in 1903, and won the Series in 1909. They took the NL and World Series title again in 1925, and another NL title in 1927. In 1960, the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the World Series. Ralph Terry of the Yankees returned to the mound to pitch the bottom of the ninth. Bill Mazeroski took the plate, and smashed a historic long drive over the left field wall after a one ball count. Mickey Mantle was quoted as saying that the 1960 series was the only loss that he had ever cried real tears over. This was the first time someone had ever hit a game-ending home run in the seventh game of the World Series.
