Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team History
Along with the Seattle Seahawks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were founded in 1976 as an expansion team to the NFL. The Buccaneers are the first post-merger expansion team to win a division title, win a playoff game, and to host and play in a conference championship game; which were all accomplished during the 1979 season. Despite their momentous start, the Buccaneers suffered through 14 consecutive seasons before experiencing a 10-year period where they were a consistent playoff contender and won Super Bowl XXXVII at the end of the 2002 season. Along with the New Orleans Saints and the New York Jets, the Buccaneers are the only NFL team to win their lone Super Bowl appearances. Over the course of their 41 seasons have compiled a regular season record of 250-393-1 and a playoff record of 6-9.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Today
The 2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season was the franchise’s 42nd season in the National Football League, and only second under head coach Dirk Koetter. Despite the team’s poor performance and failure to reach the playoffs, dedicated fans are hoping that with new talent, the Bucs will reach success in the near future. On March 9, 2017, the Buccaneers signed former Washington Commanders wide receiver DeSean Jackson, defensive tackle Chris Baker, former Dallas Cowboys safety J.J. Wilcox, former New York Jets kicker Nick Folk, and veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. With an updated roster, the Buccaneers are hopeful that their bad luck will finally turn and will become consistent playoff contenders.
