The team got its start in 1961 as the Washington Senators, formed as an expansion team after the original Senators left for Minnesota. After managing a single winning season during a decade in the District of Columbia, owner Bob Short decided that this team should head west, too. With a new name to honor their home state’s iconic officers of the law, the Rangers made a tradition of night games to escape the summer heat and started making a serious start to their hunt for the playoffs.
Rangers fans have had to wait longer than any other franchise in Major League Baseball for the team’s first World Series title, but there’s been plenty to see along the way. Nolan Ryan finished his career with the Rangers, and the team added names like Jim Sundberg and Iván Rodríguez to the halls of Texas greats. The Houston Astros and Texas Rangers have a rivalry that dates back to 2001 when the two first met. The rivalry between the two Texas teams has been dubbed the Lone Star Series as well as Silver Boot Series as the winner is awarded with a size 15 cowboy boot cast in silver.
Ranger Captain has been the Texas Rangers mascot since 2002. He is a palomino-style horse dressed in the team's uniform, but also with the number 72, the year the Rangers relocated to Arlington.
