Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins) are a team filled with rich history, historic players, and a fanbase like no other. Based in Landover, Maryland at FedExField, a Washington Commanders game is sure to be a great time for all. Washington Commanders have an extensive history, having played more than one thousand games since their founding 86 years ago, and are one of only five franchises in the NFL to record over six hundred regular season and post season wins as of 2015.
Washington Commanders History
Washington Commanders was originally founded in Boston as the Braves in 1932, they became the Redskins in 1933, and relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1937. From 1936 to 1945, Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins) went to the NFL Championship six times, winning two of them. Their second period of major success lasted between 1982 and 1991 where Washington appeared in the postseason seven times, captured four Conference titles, and won three Super Bowls out of four appearances. Despite the team’s proven success, like all others, they have experienced failure. From 1946 to 1970, Washington posted only four winning seasons and did not have a single postseason appearance, with the worst season occurring in 1961 with an overall record of 1-12-1. Since their last Super Bowl victory following the end of the 1991 season, Washington Commanders has only won the NFC East three times, made five postseason appearances, and had nine seasons with a winning record. In 2007, Washington Commanders set the NFL record for single season attendance and have the top ten single season attendance totals in the NFL.
Washington Commanders Today
The 2017 Washington Commanders season was the franchise’s 85th in the NFL, and fourth under head coach Jay Gruden. The team lost seven of the final twelve games after exiting Week 5 with a 2-2 start and failed to improve on their 8-7-1 record from the previous season. Unfortunately, Washington Commanders was eliminated from the playoffs after losing to the Los Angeles Chargers, which was likely due to the abundance of injuries at key positions and one of the league’s toughest schedules. In Week 2, Washington Commanders played the Los Angeles Rams in Los Angeles for the first time in 23 years, and their first game at the L.A. Coliseum in 28 years, where Washington got their first win at the venue since 1975.
According to Forbes, Washington Commanders is the fourth most valuable franchise in the NFL and the tenth most valuable overall in the world as of 2018, valued at approximately $3.1 billion USD.
Founded in 1932, the Washington Commanders (formally the Washington Redskins) are one of the oldest teams in the National Football League.
As a matter of fact they have. The team has been to a total of five, winning three of them. They won Super Bowl XVII (1982 season), Super Bowl XXII (1987 season), and Super Bowl XXVI (1991 season).
Despite their current location in the nation's capital, the Washington Commanders were originally known as the Boston Braves. Their name would change to the Redskins in 1932, and then the Commanders in 2022.
The Commanders rivalries are undoubtedly against their fellow NFC East members, the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and the Philadelphia Eagles. The teams have played some of the most intense and storied games in NFL history.
