An International Legacy

The franchise got its start as the Montreal Expos in 1969, an expansion team that brought the National League into Canada. In 35 years playing north of the border, the team fielded some of the best young talent in baseball, introducing players like Gary Carter, Tim Raines, and Andrés Galarraga, but their best performance came when they finished within 2 runs of the pennant in 1981.

When they moved south in 2005, the team became Washington’s fourth Major League team and the first to relocate into the District; the city had gone without since the American League’s Washington Senators moved away in 1972. Rather than adopt the old name—which sat poorly with some Washingtonians, as they don’t have voting representation in Congress—the team looked back to the District’s first 19th-century franchise and brought the Nationals back to town.

After years of work to rebuild Washington baseball from the ground up, the Nationals put together a team of contenders around players like Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg, and Daniel Murphy. They’ve emerged as tough interleague rivals for the Baltimore Orioles and regular contenders in the the National League East, topping the division 4 times between 2012 and 2017 in their quest for their first league pennant. When were the Washington Nationals founded?

The Nationals were founded in 1969 as the Montreal Expos as part of the 1969 MLB expansion. The Expos were the first major league team in Canada and named after the Expo 67 World's Fair. The team would relocate to Washington D.C. in 2005 where they've been ever since.
