Learn about the diverse heritage of Taiwan on this 2-day tour to some of the remarkable sights in the island's interior. This journey brings you to a grand, modern Buddhist monastery, a palatial temple dedicated to traditional Chinese worship, and a towering pagoda over the island's largest lake.

Day 1: Paper Workshop, Monastery Visit & Lake Cruise Set out from Taipei for a ride into central Nantou County after pickup from your hotel. Your first stop is in the township of Puli, where you get a look at a local paper workshop before you visit the grand Chung Tai Chan Monastery. Built in 1994 with a design by famous Chinese architect C. Y. Lee, the building merges Chinese and Western styles to create one of the tallest Buddhist temples in the world.

Next, take a ride to the shores of Sun Moon Lake, where a boat awaits to carry you out for a cruise on the largest body of water in Taiwan. Enjoy some spectacular views of the forested hills along the shore before you check into your lakeside hotel for the night.

Day 2: Temple Visits & Tse En Pagoda A ride along the lake's northern shore brings you to the ornate Wen Wu Temple, built to venerate China's historic patron gods. Ascend the 366 steps, built to represent the days of the year and nicknamed the Stairway to Heaven due to their height, and admire the twice-rebuilt structure meant to evoke the grandeur of Chinese civil worship.

Your next stop is at the Tse En Pagoda, a 9-story monument standing atop the lakeside mountain of Shabalan. Built to honor the mother of Chiang Kai-shek, the first president of the Republic of China on Taiwan, the pagoda's top stands exactly 3,280 feet (1,000 m) above sea level and affords a magnificent view of the lake and surrounding mountains. Make one last stop at Syuentzang Temple for another look at the beautiful scenery before your ride back to Taipei.

I was surprised that it was just my family on the tour instead of a larger group, but the tour guide took good care of us. The Sun Moon Lake is definitely worth visiting if you're in Taiwan.
