Description

Miyazaki is the birthplace of Japanese mythology. According to legend, Japan’s first Emperor was born in Hyuga (present day Miyazaki).

From the age of 15 to 45, when the capital was moved to Nara in the year 710, Emperor Jimmu ruled the country from his palace in Miyazaki. This gives Miyazaki Shrine a very special place in Japanese history!

Come to the shrine for a tour of its most sacred areas, areas not usually open to the public, and participate in a ritual purification ceremony* during which shrine maidens perform a sacred dance to the accompaniment of a dragon flute. After the tour, you can also try your hand at
making a traditional Shinto straw festoon used to welcome the gods.

  • Traditional ceremony that has deep roots in Japan’s ancient Shinto past.
