Miyazaki is the birthplace of Japanese mythology. According to legend, Japan’s first Emperor was born in Hyuga (present day Miyazaki). From the age of 15 until the age of 45, when the capital was moved to Nara in the year 710, Emperor Jimmu ruled the country from his palace in Miyazaki.
This makes Miyazaki Shrine a very special place in Japanese history! Come to the shrine for a tour of the most sacred areas, areas not usually open to the public, and participate in a ritual purification ceremony* during which shrine maidens perform a sacred dance to the accompaniment of a dragon flute. After the tour, try your hand at making a traditional Shinto straw festoon that serves as a decoration to welcome the gods.Women can delve even deeper into ancient Japanese culture by touring Miyazaki Shrine and participating in the ritual purification ceremony dressed as a shrine maiden. With a tradition dating back 14,000 years to the prehistoric Jomon period, these respected members of society played important religious and political roles, and they continue to be an integral part of daily Shinto shrine life today.
Dress as a shrine maiden and feel the spirit of this ancient tradition flow through you.
- Traditional ceremony that has deep roots in Japan’s ancient Shinto past.
