What you can expect
Batik, both an art and craft is the method of decorating cloth using wax and dye, practiced for centuries in Indonesia. Get to know this ancient tradition by creating your own and bring it home as souvenir and knowledge. Pick up at approximately 08.30 from your hotel in south Bali and depart with our guide to join Batik lesson, a fun-filled, creative workshop to produce an original design, or to try to master the detail of a traditional one. Conducted by an experienced teacher, you will start by watching the short video on the history of Batik and be introduced to the materials and tools used. Learn the step by step process from painting with wax, hand-coloring, dip dyeing and wax removing. A total of 2 hours process until you get the decorated handkerchief and certificate.
Leave for Ubud Threads of Life Gallery where the staff will guide you through the retail exhibits, teaching you about the textile arts, their cultural roots, and the importance of the gallery’s work to rural livelihoods across Indonesia. It is an educational and retail space representing the values of cultural continuity, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental stewardship. Textiles and artifacts throughout are curated to museum standards with interpretative texts and images. Conclude the day with lunch in Central Ubud and free time at the nearby Ubud Market, where you can shop for art products at competitive prices; don’t forget to bargain!
