Description

Go beyond Athens to the spectacular Cape Sounion, and see the ruins of the Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. Admire the views of the Aegean Sea, marvel at the carvings left by Lord Byron, an English Romantic poet from the 1800s, and hear about the legend of Aegeus.

Cape Sounion is a 43-mile (69-km) drive from the country’s capital, so you can see the sights and still be back in time for dinner. Drive on the coastal road along the Saronic Gulf from the capital through some of the city's most beautiful suburbs, including Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, and Glyfada, the largest southern suburb, known for its fashionable atmosphere and upmarket boutiques and cafes.

Visit the ancient Temple of Poseidon, built in the 5th century BC, settled on a rocky hilltop overlooking one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Cyclades islands and the Aegean Sea. Learn about the legend that named the Aegean Sea after the king of Athens, Aegeus, who leapt to his death off the cliff—197 feet (60 m) above the water—after believing his son was dead. Marvel at the Doric columns that inspired many poets, including Lord Byron, and then make your way back to the capital with a breath of fresh air in your lungs.

Worth seeing, but the journey by bus was rather long and it looked to me as if a journey across to the cape by boat would have been better.

It is a nice ride from Athens along the Mediterranean coast. The temple and the area have a lot history behind and the guide has delivered that well. It was nice to see the temple from a closer look-up but we did not have a chance to properly see the temple's magnificence from the distance...
