What you can expect

Discover Obuse, a historic town with deep ties to the renowned artist Katsushika Hokusai. Enjoy miso, sake, and chestnut confectioneries that have been around since Hokusai’s time.

1) Meet your guide at Obuse Station. Your guide will be outside the station holding a sign.

2) Wander through the picturesque streets of Obuse, guided by your expert (lots of photo opportunities!). Uncover the secrets of Hokusai's inspiration and the town's rich history.

3) Hokusai-kan Museum: Learn about the connection between Hokusai and Obuse. Admire Hokusai's original paintings, most notably the panels that adorn the ceiling of the Higashimachi and Kanmachi festival floats.

4) Matsubaya Brewery: Discover the heart of sake-making at Matsubaya Brewery. Tour the historic brewery and savor the delicate flavors of sake, a timeless treasure.

5) Kokuhei Miso Brewery: Visit a 240-year old miso brewery and discover the method of miso-making and the crucial role of koji, a special non-toxic mold essential for both miso (and sake) production. You'll get a bonus miso souvenir!

Visiting Zenkoji Temple, Togakushi Shrine, Nozawa Onsen, or the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park? Obuse is a wonderful detour nearby to immerse yourself in local culture!

We offer start times from 9:00am and 1:00pm. If you’d like to enjoy lunch in Obuse after the morning tour or begin the afternoon tour a bit earlier (such as around 12:00pm), we’re happy to adjust the schedule to suit your plans. Just let us know your preferred time when booking.
