The view of Mount Fuji from Lake Yamanaka, framed by long mountain ridges stretching to its left and right, is truly captivating. Swan, known as “hakucho” in Japanese, migrates here annually from February to April to nest and raise their young, braving the bitter cold. As visitors often feed them, the swans sometimes swim over specifically to interact with people, earning Lake Yamanaka the nickname “Lake of the White Swans.” On June 22, 2013, it was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site as part of “Mount Fuji – Object of Worship and Source of Artistic Inspiration.”

Legend has it that long ago, a vast lake spanned forty li around what is now Kamakura City. Within its depths dwelled a five-headed dragon. Its rampage caused mountains to collapse, diseases to spread, and floods and typhoons to rage. Unable to curb its wickedness, the people watched their villages fall into ruin. Thus arose Koshi (now Koshigoe, opposite Enoshima). One day in the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign, dark clouds suddenly gathered over the sea, shaking the heavens and earth. A beautiful celestial maiden appeared amidst the clouds, and an island abruptly rose from the sea. The dragon fell instantly in love with her, vowing to abandon his wicked ways and earnestly seeking her hand in marriage. Through his relentless efforts and constant acts of kindness, he ultimately wed the maiden. From then on, the five-headed dragon worked alongside the gods to transform the island and protect its inhabitants.

Constructed in 1252, the statue features a relatively flat facial expression, a low ushnisha (cranial protuberance), and a forward-leaning posture—characteristics reflecting the Song Dynasty Buddhist sculpture style prevalent during the Kamakura period. As a representative sculpture of the era, it has been designated a National Treasure of Japan.
