Description

Venture out of Johannesburg for a day of discovery at Cradle of Humankind, the UNESCO site home to some of the world's oldest hominid fossils. Delve into paleontological mysteries at the world-famous Sterkfontein caves, and then spot wildlife as you cruise around the Lion and Safari Park.

Depart from your hotel and travel out of the city to reach the sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Cradle of Humankind. Once you arrive, hop into an open-air vehicle for an unforgettable ride through the expansive grasslands of the Lion and Safari Park. From the safety of your seat, come face-to-face with South Africa's amazing animals in their natural habitat. Keep your camera handy to snap photos of hyenas, wild dogs, antelopes, and of course, lions.

Next, your guide leads you on an underground tour of the incredible Sterkfontein caves. Explore the limestone caverns in which a variety of Australopithecus africanus fossils have been found, including the complete female skull known as Mrs. Ples, and learn how the excavation of the caves has yielded incredible insights into our prehistoric ancestors. Afterward, spend time browsing the exhibits at the Maropeng Visitor Centre, where you can delve even deeper into the ancient development of humankind before heading back to Johannesburg.

Jason is an excellent guide. He is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The tour itself was very interesting. We started going to Lion Park, where we saw lions, cheetah, African wild dogs and we even had a chance to feed giraffes and play with some lion cubs! Then we went to Maropeng, that's a very informative museum about the history of mankind, interesting both for children and adults. It's actually fun, highly recommended! Finally we went to the Sterkfontein caves, where some major fossil discoveries were made. My overall experience was amazing and would definitely recommend for everyone, from families to solo travelers.
