Description

Discover the remote beauty of the Tiwi Islands during a ferry cruise and cultural immersion in the village of Wurrumiyanga. Enjoy a traditional welcome ceremony before indulging in a behind-the-scenes screenprinting course at Tiwi Designs, a lauded art center that gives you a taste of the local flavor.

Leave Darwin Harbour at the break of day to make the most of your time in the Tiwi Islands. Comprised of 11 secluded islets—of which only 2 are residential—the Tiwi Islands are home to the Tiwi people, an Aboriginal Australian group that inhabited the land long before the 18th-century European settlement of Australia.

During the ferry cruise, read up on the history of the islands or gaze out the window of the catamaran and watch the blue-green colors of the Beagle Gulf swirl by in a watery parade. By mid-morning, arrive in the village of Wurrumiyanga and enjoy a steaming cup of tea while participating in an authentic welcome ceremony.

Devote the remainder of the day to unlocking the charms of the island town. Visit Tiwi Designs for an inside look at a creative space that dates back to the 1960s. A friendly guide teaches you how to screenprint and sends you home with a souvenir artwork. Before returning to Darwin Harbor, savor lunch near the waterfront and allow the sound of lapping waves to soothe your soul.
