Description

Dive into the fictional world of the hit TV series Il commissario Montalbano with this full-day tour to the historic province of Ragusa. See film sites from Punta Secca to Scicli as you scope out Baroque buildings, Mediterranean beaches, and churches used as sets for the show.

Hop aboard a comfortable coach and set out for a day spent following in the footsteps of Detective Montalbano, who fights Sicily’s organized crime in a TV show that’s become a global sensation. Your first stop is Ragusa Ibla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that serves as the hilltop village of Vigata.

Admire the Baroque architecture of landmarks like San Giuseppe church and Circolo di conversazione, and head out of town to roam among the Arabic arches and Venetian turrets of the Donnafugata Castle—used as the villa of Mafia boss Balduccio Sinagra in the series.

Make your way to the coastal fishing village of Punta Secca—the fictional town of Marinella—where Inspector Montalbano has his home. See his house from the outside, walk beneath the lighthouse and 16th-century watchtower, and go for a dip if you’d like at the beach where Montalbano swims.

After lunch, visit the pretty beaches of Donnalucata on your way to Scicli, whose Baroque historic center was used as Montelusa in the TV series. Here you can see the Palazzo Comunale—used as the police station in Vigata—and the Palazzo Iacono, the police headquarters. You can opt to go inside to visit Montalbano’s office before your return to Taormina.

The journey to Ragusa area from Taormina takes approx 2 hours (traffic dependent) from the last 'pick up'. A mini bus was provided (which makes navigating the winding streets a bit easier). There were about two dozen customers. There was a scheduled stop en route at a cafe for coffee (not included in price) and restroom facilities. The scenery and sites were fantastic. The guide very informative...giving a fascinating geological and historical context to Sicily during the journey South. The filming locations were great to see and kept the customers very happy! Lunch is an optional extra, and the guide reserved a table at a local 'street food' cafe. A few bottles of complimentary wine were provided by the guide to have with our lunch ("Sicilian hospitality"). We took the opportunity to pay three Euro for the 'tour' of the offices used as the interior of the police station. Given that this is one of the highlights of the experience, could this be included as a set part of the tour?
