Take a step back in the time on this trip to the historic silver mining town of Virginia City. From South Lake Tahoe, travel along the Pony Express Trail to the tiny spot that sprang up as a boomtown in 1859, enjoying time to peruse the shops and saloons, and go for a ride on the old-timey Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

Board your luxury shuttle in South Lake Tahoe and set off north, traveling through the old settlement of Genoa and the capital of Carson City. Your tour then leads you onto US 50, roughly the route that served as the trail for the Pony Express mail service from 1860 to 1861.

After winding your way through the dusty mountains, you eventually reach the historic mining town of Virginia City, a picturesque spot that's retained much of its 19th-century charm. Learn of the silver deposit that made the city famous in the 1850s and the town's tie to writer Mark Twain.

Upon arrival, hop aboard the nostalgic Virginia & Truckee Railroad for a relaxing ride to nearby Gold Hill. Once back in Virginia City, enjoy a few hours to explore the area on your own. Dive into the rich and colorful history on a walking tour of downtown, peruse the tunnels and shafts of the underground mines, or shop for souvenirs at a gold and silver shop. Make sure to save time to have lunch at any of the city's Wild West saloons before making the drive back to Lake Tahoe.

Our guide & driver was very knowledgeable about the history of the pony express & geography from Lake Tahoe to Virginia City. The historic train ride of the mining area was wonderful. We don't think you could find a better place for shopping & eating in the old west setting.
