Description

Immerse yourself in the culture of Kyoto during a guided tour to the Fushimi Inari Shrine and the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum. An expert guide accompanies you and reveals the history behind some of Kyoto's oldest traditions and their enduring appeal for current residents and visitors to the city.

Meet your guide at the JR Kyoto Station and prepare to turn Kyoto into your playground. An efficient subway trip brings the vermilion gates of the Fushimi Inari Shrine into view. Sheltered by Mount Inari, the Shinto shrine has attracted visitors to Kyoto since 794. Admire the shrine's gate and honden, or main worship site. If you like, pass beneath the gates and hike in the direction of the mountains, pausing to pray for blessings of prosperity along the way.

Following this contemplative experience, take the subway south toward the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum. Here, more than 400 items demonstrate the age-old process of brewing sake, which is similar to crafting beer. See stunning vessels for imbibing the fermented wine and admire relics from the original brewery buildings. In the lobby, savor a sample of Ginjoshu and other sakes. Prior to returning to Central Kyoto, stroll through a shopping arcade filled with uncommon souvenirs you're unlikely to find elsewhere.
