Description

Take a look back at the history of one of Colombia's most notorious cities with a tour through the streets of Medellin. From the days of Pablo Escobar and the drug cartels that dominated local life to the city's reinvention in the early 2000s, you learn about the tumultuous past behind the sights.

A convenient hotel pickup starts the tour as you head into the southern part of the city, once the epicenter of a murderous rivalry between the Cali and Medellin drug cartels. Your guide gives you an up-close look at buildings that witnessed the violence of the area—including the Edificio Mónaco, once the residence of Medellin Cartel boss Pablo Escobar and now being renovated to house the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police.

Next, visit the cemetery that holds Escobar's tomb to learn more about the infamous character, his demise, and the changes that began in the city after his death. Return to the city center to visit San Antonio Park and admire the sculptures donated by famed artist and Medellin native Fernando Botero.

It's then time to check out Comuna 13, which earned ignoble renown during the height of the drug wars. Built in large part by the late cartel bosses, the area is now a prime example of how Medellin has transformed, with new cable cars and escalators connecting libraries and meeting centers along the steep slopes of the mountains that surround the city. Admire the thriving art scene and get a feel for the city's past and present before you return to your hotel.
