Due to its location at the confluence of the Neckar and the Rhine, shipping has played an important role for Mannheim for centuries – today, the Port of Mannheim is one of the most important inland ports in Europe. Huge container ships, loading stations and warehouses bring a cosmopolitan flair to the former working-class city. On your way from the Devil's Bridge, the oldest surviving bridge in the city, through the port area, you will repeatedly cross the waterways and learn interesting facts about the beginnings of industrial culture as well as about the lives and living conditions of the port workers. You will discover noteworthy examples of Mannheim's bridge and industrial architecture and learn about the harbor's past and present importance for trade and tourism. A final detour will take you to the Jungbusch district, which is separated from the port area only by the connecting canal: Where workers and sack porters once lived, the creative pulse of the city now beats in a multicultural, trendy neighborhood.
