Negombo Fish Market
  • 30m
Our first point to visit to the Second largest fish market in the island. Locally popular as Lellama (Lel-La-Ma), it is the second largest fish market in the country. It is situated at the north end of the Negombo Lagoon and can be seen across the lagoon bridge, which is also known as Munnakare Bridge. Approximately 4,000 boats depart to sea from here every day. Starting from 3:30am, the market is busy and thriving throughout the day, with individuals vending and bargaining over fish. This vibrant market gives tourists the opportunity to purchase fish and meet the local fisherman. It also provides the chance for them to organize fishing trips and boating excursions into the lagoon and ocean as well as learn about the fishing industry. And you will guide to the small fish market and the fish drying area.

The church was built in neoclassicism style with columns and plain walls. Its ceilings are painted with alabaster images of many saints. The walls at the upper level are fixed with sculptures of religious saints.[1] The unique paintings on the life of Christ on the ceiling were done by the N.S. Godamanne, a local Buddhist painter.[3] The beauty of the paintings on the nave is described as "thunderous".[4] A testator paid the cost of one of the altars, which was imported from Europe
Dutch Fort (Pass by)
The Dutch Fort in Negombo (known to some as the Negombo Fort) was an important fort built by the Portuguese approximately 30 kilometres north of Colombo, to defend their stronghold city. Sri Lanka’s history is littered with periods of brutal colonization under foreign rule, and the remnants of those war-fueled ages can be seen in buildings such as the forts at Galle, Colombo and as far north as Jaffna, that still stand today.
Negombo Lagoon
  • 10m
The lagoon is fed by a number of small rivers and the Hamilton Canal (also known as the Dutch canal). It is linked to the sea by a narrow channel to the north, near Negombo city. It is surrounded by a densely populated region containing rice paddies, coconut plantations and grassland. The land is used for fishing and agriculture. The lagoon has extensive mangrove swamps and attracts a wide variety of water birds including cormorants, herons, egrets, gulls, terns and other waders. Negombo, Katunayake, Seeduwa are some nearby towns. Lagoon fishing is popular among the fishing community in Negombo. Lagoon crabs and lagoon prawns are in high taste and demand.
