This was a great activity for our 15-year old and nice to get out into a pretty rural area for the morning. We learned a bit about swords and he made his own knife (fun but be aware there is no safety briefing, goggles, etc!) Downside is it is a bit hard to get to and we had to pay an extra $150 for taxi fare from Kameoka station and back and an English interpreter which we weren't aware of in advance. So it was a pretty expensive activity.

What an excellent experience, this was worth more than what we paid for it. If you have any interest in the process of blacksmithing you really need to do this. Blacksmith Yuya Nakanishi is an amazing teacher, even if you dont speak any japanese his instructions are clear and easy to understand. We pre booked a taxi and the interpreter and it was also well worth having the interpreter there but i would suggest just catching a taxi from Kameoka station as you will save yourself some money. Make sure to have a camera handy as the countryside of Kameoka is stunning and youll want to take photos before, during and after the class. One final tip, take the morning class if possible as the afternoon class will also arrive by taxi making it faster and eaiser for you to get back to Kameoka station.

The Master sword-smith was awesome and funny. had a great time learning about the samurai swords and making of my mini sword. He will even put your name in the blade which i thought was really cool. a bucket list must do, awesome experience if you are in japan for vacation or before you leave if you work here for a short time.
