Nim Li Punit, meaning "Big Hat" in the Kechi Maya language, is a captivating archaeological site nestled in the foothills of the Maya Mountains near Indian Creek village in Belize's Toledo District. This medium-sized city thrived during the Late Classic Period (approximately 721–890 AD) and is renowned for its impressive collection of carved stelae and well-preserved ceremonial architecture at its peak, Nim Li Punit housed an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 inhabitants. The city's strategic location between the Caribbean Sea and the Maya Mountains facilitated extensive trade, evidenced by artifacts such as obsidian, jade, ceramics, and shells found on-site. Notably, a significant jade pendant inscribed with Mayan hieroglyphs was unearthed in 2015, shedding light on the city's dynastic connections to major centers like Tikal and Copán.
