Description

As the day fades to night, off-road your way through the desert terrain beyond Palm Desert to reach a pristine nature reserve. Learn about the rugged landscape and the geological forces at work beneath the San Andreas Fault, and stick around after sunset to stargaze far away from the city lights.

Meet up with your guide in Palm Desert or get picked up from your hotel, snag a seat in a rugged jeep, and buckle your seatbelt for the 4-wheel-drive adventure out into the desert of the Coachella Valley. Listen to your guide describe the geological features formed by the active earthquake fault system as you wind your way through spectacular slot canyons and ancient fossil beds.

Weave through labyrinthine rock tunnels, and stop to see interpretive exhibits that bring the landscape's geological history life. Stretch your legs with a guided nature walk around the boardwalks of the Thousand Palms Oasis, a paradise of green fan palms that thrive thanks to water that seeps up through the San Andreas fault from an underground aquifer.

Make your way to an overlook just in time to watch the sunset paint the surrounding rocks in shadowy hues and fiery colors. Once darkness settles in, enjoy views of the night sky uncontaminated by light pollution from the city. Your guide points out the constellations scattered across the starry canvas before driving you back to town.
