Description

Take in the spectacular sights of Borneo's native rainforest and watch for two of the world's most amazing primates, the orangutan and the proboscis monkey. Get to know the wildlife at the Sepilok and Labuk sanctuaries, and learn about the area's wartime history at the Australia War Memorial Park.

Once you're picked up from your hotel, head to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, where young and injured orangutans are healed and trained to survive in Borneo's wild environment. Listen as your experienced nature guide explains the animals' unique genetic makeup, a 96.4 percent match for humans, and have your camera ready to snap some photographs of the orange-haired apes swinging through the trees.

Next, travel to the nearby Labuk Bay Sanctuary, a verdant forest with a multitude of wildlife within. Hear intriguing facts about Borneo's native wildlife before a journey into the forest to find the long-nosed proboscis monkey. This tour takes place at an ideal time to spot this endangered primate, and you might even spot the rare hornbill bird or silvery lutung.

After lunch, proceed to the Australia War Memorial Park, the former site of a World War II labor camp and the starting point of the Sandakan Death March. Learn about the grim history that took place here before the return trip to your hotel.
