Set out for a half-day exploration of Brazil’s rainforest flora and fauna and stunning coastal scenery by Jeep, and wander through the Jardim Botanico—a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 1808 by King John VI of Portugal.
After being picked up from your hotel, hop into an open-air Jeep and head to the Jardim Botanico. This UNESCO-designated site was originally created to grow spices imported from the West Indies, but for the past 200 years has been a public park showcasing rich native and international plants. Admire the water lilies, redwood trees, and Imperial palm trees, as well as more than 500 varieties of orchids on display.
From there, cruise toward the Tijuca Rainforest for an unforgettable immersion into the lush trees and foliage. This hand-planted jungle is the world’s largest urban forest, and stands on land that was once cleared to grow sugar and coffee. From the pagoda at the Chinese Outlook, admire sweeping views of Sugarloaf Mountain and Copacabana.
Trek through the dense vegetation on a light walking tour, keeping your eyes peeled for monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds, and watch the tumbling cascade at Taunay Waterfall. Admire the murals at the Mayring Chapel, and then stop at Pepino Beach to watch the hang gliders soaring over the hills.
