The Santa Isabel Glacier is one of the highest mountains in the Central Colombian Cordillera (arriving in Colombia the Andes are divided into 3 distinct mountain ranges). Its highest point is at 5100m, at the southern summit. Its authorized rise is that of the central peak, relatively easy and which requires little technical experience. It begins at the farm Potosi then higher by the path known as conejeras. You can also reach it by the El Cedral path, crossing the forest of mist (bosque de niebla) and the El Bosque path until reaching the lake of El Otún.

Day 3: Day 3: Attempt to climb the Santa Isabel Glacier, central summit

Stop At: Nevado Santa Isabel, Pereira Colombia
2am: we will take a hot drink and some energy bars before going out to our main goal. This hike will take us through 3 zones with distinct characteristics until reaching the summit:

Paramo / superparamo (4100m-4450m): characterized by a wide variety of high altitude plants and many small lakes.  Rocky area / ancient glacier (4450m-4750m): This very rocky area was covered with ice only a few years ago. We can see its decline through the observation of certain brands.

Glacier / Summit (4750m - 5000m): Glacier area with moderate slopes. Ascension as such is not technical but a bit physical. The temperatures can be very low at the edge of the glacier while we prepare our personal equipment. On the glacier it is vital to have good sunglasses and a sun protection. If the sun appears the temperature can reach more than 20 ° C thanks to the reflective effect of the glacier. Ice climbing time: 1h30.

From the mountain farm where we slept we will travel 10km 4x4 to reach the start of the trail at 4100m altitude. We will walk in the middle of the páramo for 3.7 km, lit by our headlamps until sunrise.
Once at the edge of the glacier we will equip with the help of our guides and begin, roped, climbing to the summit, discovering for those who begin the magic of walking with crampons on the ice. With a little luck we will be able to observe the other glaciers of the park and its multiple lakes.

We will go down the same path and will reach our mountain farm for lunch then start our descent by 4x4 to the city of destination.
In case of return by Pereira or Santa Rosa de Cabal, possibility (not included in the price) to stop at San Vicente Thermal Springs.
