What you can expect
Wine Tasting, in the vineyards. Head over the mountains into Eastern Washington, leaving the rainy coastal climate of Seattle for the sun-drenched desert hills of the Yakima and Columbia valleys. Spend a full day sipping great Northwest wines as you check out the vineyards of these 2 official American Viticultural Areas (AVAs).
Your guide picks you up at your hotel and heads east toward the Cascades, chatting about the differences in climate between the western and eastern half of Washington state. Take in the mountainous scenery during the 3 hour drive, passing from dense evergreen forests to more sparsely treed agricultural landscapes.
Visit both the Yakima Valley and Columbia Valley AVAs throughout the day, stopping at several different winemaking estates. Sample wines from each, noting the differences imbued in each glass by the area's distinctive features, from soil and terrain to sun exposure and rainfall.
Take a vineyard tour to roam among leafy rows of grape vines, and go behind the scenes at a winery to learn about the techniques and processes behind winemaking in Washington. Stop along the way to complement your tastings with a gourmet lunch, and swing by a winery that specializes in port to sip a sweet after-dinner vintage before kicking back for the return drive to Seattle.
