The Arkadi Monastery played an instrumental role in the liberation of Crete from the Ottoman Empire and resistance against the Nazis, leading it to be declared a European Monument of Freedom by UNESCO. It is located at the crossroads between the provinces of Rethymno, Mylopotamos, and Amario. The Fortezza was the citadel of the early Rethymno built by the Venetians, and remains a facinating place to visit.
