Akhtala Monastery, located in northern Armenia’s Lori Province, is a 10th-century fortified monastic complex renowned for its exceptional Byzantine-style frescoes. Perched on a rocky hilltop surrounded by deep canyons, the site served both religious and defensive purposes. Its main church, Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), built in the early 13th century, is adorned with vibrant, well-preserved frescoes depicting biblical scenes and saints, considered among the finest in the Caucasus. Founded by the Kyurikian branch of the Bagratid dynasty and later expanded by Prince Ivane Zakarian, the monastery reflects a blend of Armenian, Georgian, and Byzantine influences.
