It is said to have begun in 628 (during the reign of Empress Suiko) when a statue of Kannon was discovered in the Sumida River and enshrined by local dignitary Haji no Ataenakatomo. The principal image is the Bodhisattva Kannon, affectionately known as "Asakusa Kannon" due to its compassion. Passing through the famous Kaminarimon Gate and walking down Nakamise Street, you will find the main hall, which is bustling with worshippers from Japan and abroad.
