A little piece of heaven...
Having all our kids and grandkids together, away from all the chaos of the world, for a few days, really was a piece of heaven. The wide open space was perfect for the kids who love to run and play outdoors. There was plenty of space in the 3 houses to meet everyone's needs. The 2 kitchens helped us to easily keep everyone fed! This is a beautiful property for a large group of people.

A phenomenal getaway
"We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” Our group of 9 family and friends came to PPR to celebrate a loved one's birthday, but came away from the experience with so much more. The stars are beautiful, the mountains are breathtaking, and the combination of nature (stunning views and wildlife) and luxury (heated pool and two hot tubs) created a wonderful getaway for all of us. The courtyard and residences are clean and spacious. The PPR team is great to work with and we all had a phenomenal time. Make sure to visit the Chiricahua Mountains and the Museum when you come here - just phenomenal!

This was our 8th year staying at The Painted Pony. It is heaven on earth being out there. Upon our arrival we couldn’t help but notice the house was sparkling, looked and smelled so clean! We loved the new oven, the nightlights throughout the house, the gate in the courtyard by the jacuzzi had been fixed and swung wide open easily! It feels like home every time we come. It’s always sad when we leave and we can’t wait till the next year when we come back! This was also our first year coming in October rather than June and we loved it!!

Spectacular family vacation
Three generations of our large family enjoyed this stunning property. We loved having enough room to spread out and enough gathering spaces for spending quality time together. The pool was the perfect way to manage the heat of the day. We enjoyed seeing so much wildlife right from the patio. We feasted on a fantastic meal from the Portal Cafe and loved the local gallery and museum as well as an excursion to Bisbee and the beautiful Gadsden hotel in Douglas. The owner and team quickly responded to a couple issues, allowing us to relax into our holiday. Thank you! We can’t wait to come back.

Our seventh visit
We went to the Painted Pony six years in a row from 2010-15, so we were excited about doing a reunion tour with some of the old crew, plus some newbies. The place was more or less as we remembered it, and everyone had a fantastic time doing day trips to the Chiricahuas and Peloncillos, or just hanging out at the compound. Definitely one of the most interesting and relaxing places to visit in the SW U.S.!

Another Great Stay at the Painted Pony
Just returned from our second stay at the Painted Pony. We come to Rodeo for the dark skies and the Painted Pony is the perfect place from which to base our astronomy-oriented trip. The property is clean, well-cared for and comfortable. Highly recommended!

Your Private Retreat
The gated driveway escorts you to your main house passing the guest house and bungalow to be next. Entering the gated foyer of the courtyard your met with a beautifully carved Spanish front double doors to the home. Once you enter the home you eyes follow the wall of windows to the wood laid ceiling. The living room is filled with the comforts which to rest, leather, fireplace and a view that extends beyond the back courtyard and swimming pool. Kitchen well supplied with all of the cooking needs we’d ever need. Open floor plan and dining area to share a feast. E passive, expansive is the words that continued to repeat as I walk from the main home to the bungalow. Entering this building is when I began to feel the layers fall off my shoulders. Quite the essence of quiet, private and luxury. Entering the guest house was a surprise to learn how well this building serves even more with its own kitchen too. I can’t recommend this property enough for large groups who share time in a large main house space and then retreat to personal time in the guest house and the bungalow. Two car garage is you choose but a great athletic room for the ages that have the energy. Thank you for our stay, from Colorado, a welcome stay on our trip.

When I read your review it literally made me think I was there! "The layers start dropping off" for me once I turn off Interstate 10 and head down highway 80 towards Rodeo. That is where the pace begins to slow and where peaces, quiet and wide open spaces begin to converge into a private escape. What you have described in your review is exactly why our family can't wait to get back to The Pony when guests are not there. Thank you for taking me to to that wonderful place and experience this morning even though I am over a thousand miles away!

Great Family Reunion Spot
We thoroughly enjoyed the large and open spaces Painted Pony provided for our family reunion. We ended up with 13 people most of the week-long stay over New Year's Eve 2022 (5 were impacted by Southwest Airlines cancellations). We had ample room for all to be comfortable. Highlights included sharing meals cooked in the well-equipped kitchen, hiking on nearby trails, a Ghost Town tour, and a NYE fire in the outdoor chimney. The large courtyard attached to the main house was a wonderful gathering place. (Note: the pool was very nicely heated as information states but it was still pretty chilly weather some days for swimming during winter.) Owner Glen was always responsive and helpful with any questions or concerns. Check-in was simple. Highly recommend for large gatherings.

What a setting!
Certainly lived up to our expectations! Beautiful desert mountain views, quiet seclusion. Easy drive over to some great hikes in the Chiricahua wilderness area. Beautiful pines and aspens, crystal clear creek natural pool all seen on the South Fork hike. Estate was perfect for our 6 adults and 8 kids. So glad we pulled the trigger on this trip!

Due to what seemed like an unusual amount of rain this summer the roads were difficult in a car, but fine for trucks and SUV. The wet season also seemed to bring alot of bugs out at night. It took my husband and son a full day working to get the pool up to bar, the pool cover was open, not sure for how many days so there was about a foot of pine needles covering the bottom and lots if dirt and bugs. The guest house TV didn't work and the guest house refrigerator didn't work...but the main house is where we spent most of our time. We stayed there with 14 adults and 1 teenager and everyone had a nice room with a good bed. The place was beautiful and very clean. The owner responded right away to all issues. There are many areas of the property to visit, read, play games and relax. Overall and for the price. This place can't be beat!

Hi Jill. Thanks for the 5 star review telling others about the cleanliness and the beauty of Painted Pony! Thank you for recommending Painted Pony for others. There was tremendous lightening storm with an unusual amount of rain the night prior to your arrival . That storm blew up one of our 4 TV’s and made the road slippery. For future guests reference, this was a one-off event. Passenger cars are fine on our road under normal conditions. You don't need an SUV or Truck. The TV mentioned in the review has been replaced and our road is back to normal. With regard to the pool situation, upon your arrival I personally went over the pool operation with your son while he was at the pool. On the phone he told me he had already opened the pool cover. That is why you saw it open when you went to the pool. We keep the cover closed at all times. Only guests open the cover. He told me the pool was in great shape and the temperature perfect at 87 degrees. He said he had our robot running cleaning up "a few" pine needles that were on the pool bottom due to the storm blowing them under the closed cover. In his words, it was not anything serious. During your stay no one informed me of any problems with the pool. As you have stated we are responsive to our guests needs and if the pool needed our attention and you asked us to help we would have done so. It is impossible to get a FOOT of pine needles in the pool. That must be a typo in your review or being dramatic? It is normal for a strong wind storm to blow a few pine needles under the pool cover even when it is closed. This is easily addressed with our pool robot and other tools we provide and takes little time. Thanks again for staying with us and your 5 star review! We are thrilled that you and your family had a great time!

This has become an annual event for our family over the last seven years. A true desert hideaway that offers resort living. So close to the Chiricahua mountains and a variety of historic sites. Nothing like a swim in the large pool or relaxing in the jacuzzi after a day of hiking and bird watching. We give it our highest rating!

A Great Stay!

Fabulous stay
We felt so privileged to be able to stay at this beautiful property, with dark night skies, astonishing quiet, lovely shade trees, a resident great horned owl pair, and views of two mountain ranges as far as the eye can see. We had our meals on the beautiful patio, the kitchen was very well stocked for catering, the beds are great, the furnishings upscale, and the whole place felt very welcoming. We kept a busy schedule but a few used the pool, very nice in the late afternoon and early evening hours.

Amazing place for a long-term stay
We had a university-aged group stay at Painted Pony for a month and it was absolutely wonderful. The space was expansive and had plenty of space for everyone, with lots of different options for how to divide up students. We found the space great for cooking meals and sharing in community and the wifi was great for remote coursework. Overall the experience was top notch and such a deal for what you get at the property. The surrounding area was beautiful and there was lots of natural spaces for students to explore. Communication from Glen was above and beyond in the time leading up to our stay and we are grateful for the accommodations made to our specific group.

We had a wonderful time at the Painted Pony Resort. Great place for a big family get together. Lots of activities on site for all ages and the mountains are stunning. It was cold and rainy the weekend we were there but we never felt cramped and still used the patio fireplace, pool and jacuzzi. Everyone loved it.

I was watching the weather when you were there and was worried because a major cold front was impacting the west causing havoc. So glad to know there were breaks in the weather and the pool was still warm enough to use in late December and that your family enjoyed all the other activities even though the weather was not all that cooperative during your stay! Dreams Come True
This was the greatest vacation experience our group of friends has ever had. The property is a dream. You never have to leave. The pool, the courtyard, the hot tub, the games, all of it is absolutely perfect. The courtyard was an ideal central location for our group. Glen and Paula helped us with all of our needs including the extra large grill. We had everything we needed. The beds we’re very comfortable. I cannot recommend this property enough if you have a large group looking to unplug and unwind. The scenery is breathtaking. Well worth the extra drive time!! We will be back as long as Glen has us.

A truly unforgettable trip
If you're looking for a sign to book a stay at the Painted Pony, consider this it! My group of friends and I (14 of us total) had the time of our lives. The property provided plenty of space for us to play, rest, recharge and sightsee while also feeling communal and connected. There is SO much nature to take in (although if you're not into bugs/critters, you should definitely prepare yourself!), and waking up to the views of the mountains on every side truly felt surreal. The super remote location (the driveway alone is 3 miles!) is ideal for privacy but it's still close to great hiking and a store nearby. The Painted Pony will always have a special place in my heart!

A Desert Paradise
Our family discovered the Painted Pony Resort in 2016 and we have been going there every year since. When we arrived this year we enjoyed a fabulous dinner of locally produced, smoked and barbecued pork roast that had been arranged for the day before. This beautiful and spacious resort is perfect for family gatherings. We enjoyed many meals around the large dining room table. The living room with cathedral ceiling is great for TV, reading, visiting and watching baby birds learning to fly on the patio. After our daily hike in the nearby Chiricahua Mountains, there is nothing like coming home to the refreshing pool and relaxing jacuzzi. Our grandchildren also enjoyed basketball, pool, and ping pong. The Chiricahua Desert Museum and Sky Islands Grill & Grocery are only two miles away. We highly recommend the Painted Pony Resort and hope to continue our annual visit for many years to come.

Great trip with friends
Lovely spring break weeklong trip with 4 families, 9 kids and 9 adults. We had plenty of room to spread out across the houses, ample beds, bedrooms, and bathrooms (7 total?) Pool was wonderful and the highlight of the place for the kids. It’s big, plenty of room for our crew and did fine keeping up for afternoon swim time, even with an unusually cool and windy week of weather (highs in 60s and lows in 30s). We sat outside listening to the birds the last evenings dinner. We did daytrips to cave creek canyon (awesome), Chiricahua national monument (kinda far), and Bisbee (also kinda far). Also did some biking and running right from the property and rented the hangar for kids birthday dance party the one night. Owner was great to work with, helped us troubleshoot a couple of things, and very responsive.

Great place for Family Reunion
We had a wonderful time with our large family from ages 5 months, to elementary ages, to tweens and teens to parents to grandparents. The Game Room with pool, ping pong, and foosball was a great hit. We loved the open feel of being on such a large property in the valley with views of mountains all around. The teens and tweens hiked and explored and encountered some great nature! It is remote, but we brought in everything we needed - and the three full sized fridges and extra freezer made it great for the week. Also nice to have two stoves to be able to cook for our crowd. And the heated swimming pool was enjoyed by all - even in November. Both owner and local manager were very responsive to our needs. Thanks for a great week - and we hope to come back again.

This was our family’s fifth year in a row at the Painted Pony. It was as idyllic as ever. Hiking everyday in the gorgeous and wildlife filled Chiricahua mountains. We all loved the Painted Pony
Family reunion and a chance for all of us to say goodbye to Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma. We released wish-lanterns one night, and had a fantastic fireworks show another. Mom wanted her ashes spread in the desert, so we did a final farewell one night. Star gazing and planet hunting one night. Water balloon fights during the day. And of course, getting to visit brothers, nephews, and niece with all of their children was wonderful. We always leave with someone planning the next reunion. We all loved the Painted Pony, but don't know if we will ever make it back to southern New Mexico, I put in more than 5,650 miles driving, and the shortest distance anybody had to drive was 1,700 miles round-trip. The resort itself was everything advertised, plenty of space, nice rooms, pool, the stars at night, scorpions, coyotes, and rattlesnakes. We all loved it. Thank you

Our family’s third year at the Painted Pony. It’s a great place!
Beautiful, spacious property! Only minutes from hiking and bird watching in the Chiricahua’s. Swimming, basketball, and bike riding on site. Watched baby birds learning to fly on the patio. Saw a Sonoran Desert Toad catching crickets one evening. A wonderful experience overall. It will remain an annual event for our family.

Desert Oasis
We had a family reunion on this property, it was a fabulous visit with everyone. The property manager took excellent care of us. The place is very well stocked, the cookware was very large so you might bring some with you. There are plenty of dishes, flatware, coffee cups and glasses. The pool was great, there is a wonderful library throughout the main house. The pool table and ping pongs tables got used a lot. It was very comfortable and relaxing. We highly recommend this place and would use it again.

Family Meeting

Beautiful Property,Serene with breathtaking scenery!
Bruce was very welcoming, very helpful! Air conditioning went out, had it fixed in record time! Linens and towels were very clean! Kitchen not as clean as I like, but Im pretty picky! Bugs were a problem but expected since it's a desert area. ALL IN ALL wonderful experience with plenty of room for the entire family!

Thanks for the great review and so happy you had such a great time! Not sure what was not right with the kitchen since we went over a check list at check-in and the guests were asked to bring to our attention anything during their stay which they did not do.

This place ROCKED!!!!!!!!
We loved this property!!! Bruce did a fantastic job making us feel comfortable. The place was clean and had everything we needed. The ice maker rocked, along with Bruce and everything else!!!! Great place for a family reunion, even with little kids!!!!

Alyssa's graduation party/family reunion
The Painted Pony Resort met all of our expectations and more. There was plenty of room for our huge family of 40 along with something for everyone to do. Besides swimming, playing ping pong, playing basketball, or shooting pool, our family could also just kick back in the amazing courtyard to just read or enjoy each other's company. We really did find a gem in the desert with this rental. Thank you Bruce and Glen for making this occasion priceless.
